i'll be doing first rum strip tomorrow with a macstill rum recipe 23l wash.
used 3l molasses and 3kg raw sugar as per recipe.
do i use the same amounts of molasses & sugar for the 2nd generation wash with 20% dunder?

Yeah howard... use the same amounts with each gen. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Just keep an eye on the ph with that amount of dunder.. you may need to adjust to prevent it from stalling.
If you don't put hot dunder on the yeast bed, you wont need to add new yeast.

thanks for that.
just finished putting the 2nd gen in fridge, need a beer.
i added the molasses and sugar while the dunder was still hot, then put my wort chiller in the dunder to bring it down to 30c pretty quickly.
i had put 5l of warm water over the old yeast until i added the dunder.
just one problem, when the chiller was in, i couldn't help licking the thermometer after every temp check.

i know it was a strip run, but i still collected in about 20 jars, just to practice running my nose and tonsils over tomorrow.

2 hours later...............
2nd gen is all quiet.

confession time ..........
the remaining 10L of hot dunder, stuck it in a 30L fermenter, added 3L molassses& 3 kg sugar.
hydrated 80gms of lowans yeast and added.
this is going off in the fridge. :o

Just be aware that there will be a fair bit of smearing between fractions, but you may still get a bit of an idea. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

yep , it was just practice really.
but even on a strip run you can have some fun.
from start to finish, i smelt, felt, tasted, noted ABV, noted temps, L/minute etc etc
i think it was all pretty smeared like you said, but it's a learning curve.

Licking the thermometer, I had never thought of cleaning it that way.
You are definitely an ideas man :)
I ask the VET next time I see him if he uses that method as well

Enjoy the ride mate this is a fantastic hobby

happy to report that the wash i started with fresh yeast, molasses, sugar, 10L dunder is still going like a train.
the old yeast that i added molasses, sugar and 10L dunder, woke up overnight and is also going hard.

are both these washes considered 2nd gen because of the dunder?
