So I have read the no plastic policy on the forum and this is why I am asking specifically about glass but I am left wondering why most essences “Makes 2.25 Litres” but I cannot find any glass bottles in the 2.25L size (not even HBSs)?

What containers do you guys recommend to use for mixing in essences and where do you get them?

2 x 1.125 = 2.25, lucky they do make 1125ml bottles.

I use jars for ageing and storing mate
I get the 3 litre ones from the reject shop for $5:00
That will leave a little bit of room to spare

Thanks for the input. The problem I see with 2x1125 or 3x750 is that you then need to measure/divide the essence between those containers, I like the idea of a 3L as I could always mark the fill levels on the side of the jar.

Or you could mix it in a larger vessel then decant it into the smaller bottles.

Get yourself in to Kmart. They have lots of different sizes. I use the 2.2L jar for making up essences, but only make the volume up to 2.1L so I can fill 3 x 700ml bottles.

That is exactly what I am wanting to do just wanted a bottle big enough that wasn’t plastic that I could add everything together and give it a good old shake to mix.

Apologies, a 5 litre demi is useful in more ways too for this.

Then a 5 litre demijohn with a silicon bung from your local HBS is what you're after.

What I was getting at though was that it doesn't necessarily need to be a bottle.

True I suppose it doesn’t have to be a bottle per say but bottles do pour nicer

if you are going to fill 3 x 750ml bottles..
i wouldn't use my 5l plastic measuring jug.
i wouldn't because the few seconds that 40% alcohol is in there while i mixed the essence, before i filled the bottles, would be against the rules.
so i wouldn't.
not that i use essences, but if i did, i wouldn't do it that way. :shifty:

kmart has loads of flip jars, lots of sizes

I have about 6 1.125L i was lucky enough to get them in a free giveaway from an ex distiller, i buy the classic spirits in the box, contains 2 satchels that fit one in each bottle, sometimes i just dump 4.5l in a glass carboy with 4 satchels.

On this topic, what is the recommendation for lids on jars?

I would like to get some airtight jars for adding wood chips for ageing and smaller jars for collection but I am never sure if using lids with tin is ok for storage if the liquid comes into contact. Currently using demijohns and 2lt bottles.

Is silicon ok? Dense cork I would imagine should be fine.

Use paper towel with elastic band to hold it on. Let it breathe.

Thanks BigRig. Is evaporation a concern with paper towel?

Evaporation or The Angel's Share when aging will take all the stuff we don't want to drink anyway, so depending on the quality of the spirit will basically determine the amount the angels take.

Also try to age the demi's or bottles in a cool dark place as heat will also cause more Angels Share :handgestures-thumbupleft:

so the rule of thumb is make a quality drop and don't let it get too hot and the Angels will only take a small amount :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers Bryan
