This may not be the correct place for this topic?

I'm about to do an "Odin's easy Gin" maceration. I just picked up some juniper berries from a local spice shop. On the way home at traffic lights i had a squiz and squeezed one through the bag and i broke open as it was dry. Is this how they're meant to be? I was under the impression they should still have some elasticity/moisture content to them?

Did it have a juniper smell when you broke one open, if so wouldn’t be too stressed.
Although they should not be completely dry. Where did you buy them from? Australherbs or herbies are usually pretty good.

Yes they do have that small hint of pine to them. I purchased at VelSpices locally just to give 2-3ltrs of Odin's easy gin a try. I do have juniper and corriander in my wish list on Australherbs website. If Odin's gin turns out ok I'll get a kilo and try Zmurgy Bob's extract as well.

Hey Bender,

No problems.

Odins gin works really well, just be careful with how long you macerate (particularly the orange)
Also make sure you don’t get any of the orange pith when you peel the orange.

I can't find tangerine this time of year. So I went with 1.5 mandarins, 0.5 orange, 0.5 kaffir lime and 0.5 tahitian lime in a 3ltr batch. I scraped all the white pith off all citrus peels as you mentioned. Just had a snifter and it smells good with lime just coming through on top (I love lime) so it smells like its coming along really well :happy-partydance:

I’ll run it through the new still, broken down into pot still mode on top of the old T500 boiler.

Just be aware that with 3 litres it will heat up super fast bender so don’t expect a 1 hour warm up time :)

It is more like 5 minutes mate , my power is often between 35 and 40 % to get a slow take off speed. That is just to give you an idea mate because every run is different :)

Do a trial with some distilled water mate. Water boils much higher than Gin so remember that :).

It is because there is such a small volume to heat up.
