1st Stripper

Postby Moonshyner » Tue Jun 28, 2022 8:52 pm

Hello seasoned 'stillers,

Am about to start my 1st ever stripping run.
I have a new Alcoengine pot still.
I've done a steam clean running it for about an hour.
This will be a sacrificial run.
As I have a 22 litre sugar wash, it seems a waste to use all of it for a sac run.

I have a 30 litre boiler that is rated at 2000 watts, but running it through a power meter shows that it is using only 1450 watts.
My setup is:-
Boiler
250mm stainless steel tri clover tube (2")
Sight glass with copper bubble plate
Alcoengine pot still

Q:
Should I run it flat out and collect everything down to 10%?
Or would it be better to reduce the power and collect a bit slower?
Would it be any better to use a 500mm copper tri clover tube instead of the s/s?
Would packing the s/s tube with copper scrubbies be a good idea?

Am trying to get it right the first time but don't mind stuffing up if all else fails.
I'll treat it as a learning curve.

Any answers or suggestions muchly appreciated.

Cheers,
Moonshyner

For a stripping run, run it flat out and collect everything down to 20%. You can go lower to 10% if you wish but weigh up time v output, it really slows down as you get near 20%. I wouldnt use any packing and keep the column as short as possible (250mm).

Use the packing and other stuff for the spirit run.

strip as hard as the PC can handle it.
i strip until the whole collection is 40%abv, then i don't have to dilute.
in my case, that means i strip until it's about 15%abv at the spout.
i use a short column with just 2 rolls of copper mesh to clean the sulphides out.

Stopping at 40% would be fine for making neutral, but lower is better for flavoured washes, 30 or even less, last rum i did ended up at 20
