Constant 77degree temp for boma run

Postby Banjo » Mon Sep 22, 2025 11:27 am

Hi all,

I ran my TPW through the boka yesterday, ran well with taking the acetone off and got it to 77 degrees and let it stabilise. Then turned the tap on to run the alcohol slowly.

This all worked well except I could not get the temp above 77 degrees until the abv of the wash dropped as is expected. Boiler and water ran flat out the whole time til the end when temp went up (realise water runs flat out regardless)

Have I just made a 1.4L (after cuts) of methanol or do I have a Erhanol. I assume I have ethanol but good to ask.

Hey Banjo,
Check out this thread. It got me sorted for my first run.

Once I'm close to 78° I knock my power controller down to 130-140v, you mentioned running boiler flat out whole way.

As the alcohol in the boiler depletes , the temp rises .

it's difficult to get your head around, but you have no control over the temp of the liquid in your boiler.
it will boil at whatever temperature that is the boiling point for a particular mix of liquid.
think of a pan of water.
the boiling temp is 100°C.
you cannot change this by applying loads of power, it will always be 100°C.
by varying the power, the only thing that changes is the rate of boil and the amount of steam given off.
basically, we try to control the amount of steam given off by controlling the power.

imho if you are doing a reflux spirit run, the column is stable, the vapour at the top of the column will be slightly lower than 78°C.
on a stable column the vapour with a lower boiling point will collect at the top. these vapours contain the stuff we usually throw away (fores)
