Cleaning requirements after being dormant?

Postby slideshowbob » Sat Sep 27, 2025 10:05 am

Hi all,

I'm preparing to kick off another batch of distillation goodness, after not having done anything since February - March. The 2 stills (alcoengine pot and reflux) got a thorough water rinse after their last exercise in March.

Am I likely to need to do any cleaning before putting them back into action? Ie a vinegar run or a sacrificial strip run?

Thanks!

I never have Bob, if cleaned after the last use, as you say they were, you will be right to jump straight in, assuming the bits are not full of dust or criters :)

Gave all my stuff a quick soapy wash and rinse after it sat in storage for 12mths. Nothing more was needed because I’d put it away clean and dry. No sacrificial stuff.

Stainless steel, just relocate the spiders and rinse out :handgestures-thumbupleft: . Copper, i’d run a diluted vinegar run to clean the copper, then do a simple sugar wash. :?

With my copper bubbler it may dormant for months at a time and I don't bother cleaning it at all as when the foreshots and heads go thru the internals are clean as so no need to be anal like those with SS stills :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
