Re-Distilling Cooking Rice Wine (38%) for a Neutral Base?

Postby mhstill » Sat Nov 29, 2025 6:08 pm

Have come accross this stuff at a local asian mart. Ingredients read: Water, Rice, Soybean, Salt (3.5%)
$5 a bottle 610mls.

Thoughts on re-distilling it for an easy neutral base for a beginner learning the ropes of distillation?

I've only done 2 runs so far, a mistake-filled grain mash and a sucessfull cask wine (11 litre) run. Open to other suggestions...

At a guess the salt will be left behind in the boiler but…….
I did think about this years ago but never did it because I was worried the taste of the salt would carry over since the air still is a basic pot still .
Give it a go and report back :handgestures-thumbupleft:

What are the chances of the salt passing through a packed copper reflux column?
If you think that’s minimal, I’ll give it a crack and report back :)
I’d need to get 9-10 bottles so that I can run my boiler. Willing to take a chance on $50

Have a read of the tried &proven section, weetbix allbran, nutrigrain, fast fermenting vodka wash, there’s lots to try and great for gins, some stick to tomatoe paste wash it’s all up to you, I tried redistillimg cask wine when I first started thru it all out and started on tpw, then away we went down down down the rabbit hole.
