evaporation

question on evaporation...

Is it really something to be concerned about? currently im storing my stripped washes in 15l stockpots and they have glass lids with about a 5mm hole in the top. Has anyone noticed significant evap and am i going to be losing booze?

I know ppl put coffee filters over their collections to 'let it breathe' and some of the higher unwanted alcohols evaporate. But i dont understand how it would stop the alcohols i want from evap'ing as well. Also i would need something that would cover stockpots or another idea altogether

or the evap could be minimal and not worth worrying about?

Hi haze,
I store my stripped washes and low wines in a beer keg with the spear taken out and use a 2" stainless end cap , gasket and 2'tri clamp. its sealed up nicely and i dont get any evaporation , if ya can get ya hands on one or a 18L corny keg they would work good for ya ,i also use the corny kegs to oak in as the have a good size opening in the top to put ya oak into .

I use either 3 litre reject shop glass Mason. Or just re insert the spear to a keg

Bloke,

I air for spirits upto a week with no lids on. After timbering and watering down to 65 abv sometime another week or two with out lids. depends on smell and taste. Over the weeks you'll loose 2-5 % in winter more in summer.

does make a smooth drop :-D

The low wines shouldn't evaporate too much, would be more concerned after the spirit run

Yes, evaporation is distillation in slow motion but without a head or condenser on your 'boiler'. Leave it unsealed for too long and your good juice will just float away into the aether.
