alright what the f**k have i done

Postby 8-ball » Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:43 pm

ok i was running a molasses wash in my SSt500 still like i do every other time when doing a sugar wash ( this is the first time i've done molasses and just felt like refluxing it)

Now for about an hour it was running great making a great product at approx 90% and then after about the 1st litre of sweet sweet rum tasting spirit the temp dropped slightly heard a tingling sound and noticed the output slowed right down,

then all of a sudden is started pouring brown hot wash out so i switched it off and waited a bit turned the water off and pulled it apart and pulled the packing out in case it had blocked,
so i repacked and started up again and then BAM  same thing happened

so i gave up and turned it all off and came to you guys for help

cheers for help in advance

Mate it sound like your boiler has to much in it, mollasses is quite dense, so it really boils up. I have done this on my first run, it pisses out. Dont throw the wash out just reduce the volume. I dont know much about your still, but this sound like what has happened. Dont be dis-hearten, stick with it.

yeah that was my next thought im not gonna give up i have another 95l of molasses to go before i give up ,

also if i have overfilled the boiler why would it have run really well to start off with i left a good 200mm in the top of the boiler

That's called a puke.

Some of the best tasting spirit you'll get and the reason why i started adding wash to strip runs.

A ot of people advocate a little butter to the pot to stop the foaming. i've found some canolla oil works too. 8-)

Since I had my first drama with mollasses, I havent had any since, I have 30litres of stripped mollasses downstairs, and it was fine, but I get probably only filled my boiler just over 3/4. Empty some out & turn it back on.

I just leave it running and collect the spew into a big bottle until it runs clear, then put that bottle of spew aside for the next run ;)

Then pretend nothing ever happened

I've always either turned it off and let it settle, then restart with much less heat, or added some butter/canola oil before restarting (teaspoon full or two). This puts a bit of a film on top and helps stop the puking.

It's called puking because it's called puking.
