Disapointed... first TPW

Postby Bourbonpig » Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:52 pm

I have been doing SS Classic Turbo for quite a while now and never had any problems with off flavors, bad smells etc.. maybe a slightly off smell while it was fermenting, anyway tried the TPW and while i was impressed at how well it fermented i was disapointed with the overall product. I did the cuts as directed, threw the 1st 100ml and did the remaining in 300ml cuts. I could smell and taste the difference with the heads, hearts and tails so just kept the hearts. It smelled a little tomato pastey out of the still so i run it through the carbon which got rid of the TP smell but now does have a really faint metho smell.. not too bad at all.
This would have to be the worst one i have done... generally with the classic i get double the yeild with no weird smells. I have put another 2 x TP fermenters down again and try running the still a little cooler next time although i ran the last one at 76deg so i dont think it was too hot.
Any body else got any ideas.. i was so looking forward to this almighty TPW that i kept reading about.

I was about to say the same thing.

As far as the wash goes, if it tastes 'metho' that's usually heads to me.

Also any 'spirity' sort of smell can often be removed by allowing it to air for a few days. The higher alcohols (heads) evaporouate in higher quantities first.

i love the TPW and find it so easy compared to when i used to "turbo"

no carbon filtering (and no filter building.... to avoid plastic)

but i find the best way is to strip a few washes on the pot still, then re-run it in my boka.

1st pot run i get some TP flavor (very light but)
2nd run no on reflux TP

but if you like the SS classic turbo dont let us sway you, maybe do the last TPW you have then go back to turbo ?

but i alway say it's nice to try new things :)

no not really, the avatar was offensive to a wider degree

in a way that it could have been seen as p.0RN or maybe worse... due to the nature of what was happening in the picture

thats is a big difference in say McStills or Kimbo one's

Nope! but I will not allow any material on here that can seen as "porn" of any kind ;)

Lets not get all antsy over it, just upload something more appropriate and we'll never mention it again :)

Besides the fact that there a number of ladies who are members and regular posters.

It's just not appropriate

Public Announcement Time
Google can and will drop a site that the google spiders find has porn in its content.
What does Google class as porn, thats a weird thing to answer and we will never fully understand that but - camel toes are out as is naked boobies.
But, having said that, a lot of sites still show even with such content so go figure.
Continue.

anyway back to TPW

i got one going right now, 2 days old

what i have noticed that i dont get a big krausen on top any more, it just fizzes madly like a glass of lemonade etc.

not sure why? it seems happy but does not go mad with foam on top etc
i have it heated so low temp is not the issue

whats others TPW doing lately

I agree with the bourbonpig that the TPW was not what is has been hyped up to be on this site. I also agree with the mentality of "fuck the home brew shop cos they rip us off!!!) and this true to a degree but if you need to run the TPW through the still a couple of times to get a good product then it is a fine line between that and buying all the turbo "shit" and doing one ferment and one run and ending up with 3 times the clean spirit that isn't too different to the TPW.

If I need a to resupply in a hurry then turbo is the way to go as I don't think there is any different smells when fermenting or stilling as everyone else claims.

But... I also want to do things at minimal cost and try to get the best product (oxymoron)

I think if you are after a clean spirit then the TPW of bran wash or plain sugar wash are a good way to go but they are no "better" than doing a turbo wash properly (which is costly with the carbons and clears)

It all depends how much you want and how good you want it. I have 25L in a barrell ready to go thats 35 700ml bottles, that only took a few months to gain and if i drink that personally in a few months I think my liver will jump out my arse and run away.................

Could it all be just a case of quantity over quality ?

If I need a to resupply in a hurry then turbo is the way to go as I don't think there is any different smells when fermenting or stilling as everyone else claims.

Honestly! I can tell the difference as soon as I sniff the bottle, and even Mrs Mac wont touch anything made from turbo yeasts.... ask her about the old fella up the road that gave us some of his best to try out that she made punkins muck from ;)

I thought it was a bit rough but would have drank it, but she poured all 5 liters down the sink  while saying "I'm not fucken drinking that shit"

But that's the great thing about all this, as long as your happy with what your making and your not killing your friends, family or self, then who's to say your doing anything wrong?

I've never made a bad batch of anything, some just arent as good as others

I have tried most of the Turbo's and settled on Vodka Star.
I also ran 4 TPW between turbos so I could do a true back to back comparo.
I gave up on the TPW for a couple of reasons (but I will try again at a later date, maybe)
Reasons are:
Lower total output
Made a mess of the T500 column packing (this was a big deal for me)
Slight smell in output
Much longer ferment times
Dry aftertaste of finished product (unpleasant to me)
More scum in fermenter to cleanup (very slight but noticeable)
I dont use carbon in the ferment or for filtering, but I felt the TPW should have been filtered to be as clean as the VS.

Sugar washes should be stripped and run as low wines. All distilleries run at least twice. That's why it got your column dirty if you put it in your column.

People on AD who'v run hundreds of washes and decided to keep using turbo have been cutting both the yeast and the sugar in half, in other words, they'll still use 1 pkt of turbo yeast and 8kg of sugar or whatever it is but in 1 50-60l ferment.

This means that the yeast is not under osmotic stress from the sugar load initially, it is not under stress st the end and autolysing from too much alcohol in the wash and the wash is not loaded with unused nutrients.

You could avoid the first problem by step feeding i spose, but you still have the others.

Macca's fill's you up quick too, but it ain't mum's lamb roast ;)

Thats correct.
Ferment 1 pack with 6kg sugar and 21lt water.
In these conditions I am leaving it 3 weeks (2 weeks ferment, 1 week clear) then run through T500 and drink

Andy i am not having a go here, your process sounds very sound (good)

but that barely should be called a turbo, TPW can handle 6 kg in about 23/24L (i normally do 5kg) as it's a nice number ?
thats why i like TPW and keg boilers, does not matter if it's 20 -> 30L it fits in and takes the same time (nearly same time)

i would hope the vodka star would be good at those amounts and time..
based on a 3 week turnaround thats not really turboing along IMO

i was thinking a 8kg one in the still in a week...
one of those MEGA turbo's 48hr 8 kg super bombs :)

this is a good discussion but
