Bio Balls

Postby R J Blake » Tue Dec 02, 2025 7:19 pm

Hi There,
I have been using a T500 still for several years now and have never heard of the following.
I have been told that activated carbon bio balls can be placed in the column instead of the copper or stainless steel saddles.
Apparently this is supposed to filter out the "nasties" and produce 90% plus alcohol that does not require further carbon filtering by reducing
the alcohol level with water.
Has anyone heard of this process?
Thanks,
Roger Blake.

Hi Roger ,
How about jumping into the welcome centre and saying GDay and telling us a little about yourself .
Now , I’ve only ever heard of bio balls in fish tanks , never in stills and along those lines you can’t “filter” while distilling.
The 2 processes are completely separated .
Let me guess , this was offered to you by a home brew shop , you know the ones who need to pay rent and keep the lights on.
Hang around , have a read and learn the good ways .
You’ll spend less and drink better

I think he means hydroton used in hydroponics. Impossible ro filter the spirit while still being made in column.
It would work as packing but so do.marbles lots of better options hower like stainless or copper scrubbies or lava rock scoria..

:)) :)) :))

Mate you told me to stay out of HBS ~ I have learnt that lesson and only time I go there is for Essences ~

I was advised that as I could not get better than 70% out of my Pot still I should clean it~ Yeah right ~ ( I have a new copper column still arriving this week!)

As for Activated charcoal ~ I buy on line in 500 gram lots ~ (Locally they are just too expensive!)

I probably over use the carbon but I have a two stage separate filter plus the cartridge as installed on the Still spirits Tank! Not had any issues !

As a dumb ass I tried cleaning the carbon ~but gave up on that one and went bulk purchase! Well pleased with my end product overall ~

(My good lady's son spent several years in Japan and Okinawa and he reckons my scotch is as good as any Japanese whisky he had tried ~ )

All my research I have not heard of using carbon balls ~ My pot still came with ceramic balls which I regularly cleaned with Citric acid, but that is now old history ~ !

I believe the ceramic balls are more effective in the distilling process?
