Ageing in glass

Postby deryn » Tue Mar 12, 2019 12:15 pm

How do you guys deal with airing, angel share, etc. when ageing your spirit in glass?

I remember reading that someone loosely seals the top of their demijohns with alfoil. And someone else said they seal them with flip top lids, but open them up and let them air for one day a month. I'd love to see what everyone else does. Maybe this can be a poor mans version of the "Show Your Barrels" thread. :laughing-rolling:

For quite a while I've been using a little bit of chux cloth held on with a rubber band, to allow air flow while keeping the bugs out. I don't remember if I read of someone else doing this, or if I just decided it would do until I worked out what everyone else does. I'm worried that might allow too much air flow.

You may leach dye from chux cloth you would be better off with unbleached paper/coffee filters :handgestures-thumbupleft:
looks very tasty by the way :D

I use 2 litre flagons for rum with 2 dominoes in each and have the caps screwed on tight. Never had a problem with a build up of pressure.
With brandy I use a 54 litre demijohn with 54 dominoes in with a silicon bung that has been taped over to seal. I suppose any pressure buildup would leak out due to the tapered bung. Every week I give them all a shake. No explosions yet. :-B

+1 on using coffee filters. Seem to work well... i cover over filter with foil most of the time and take foil off to air every now and again.
