wooden keg

Postby PhillT » Fri Dec 26, 2014 10:09 pm

Just on the off chance ,.... I have an old Swan Brewery 5 gallon ginger beer keg.
No idea what wood it is made from, but it is bloody heavy for its size.
It would be nice to know if it would be any good for ageing, or storing some Whiskey in.
Anyone know for certain what they made them from?
Suggestions over the years have been, Sheoak, Wandoo & imported oak (of some sort) but no one has been sure.

Thanks.

ginger beer traditionally was aged in oak so probably made from oak imo. but that it just a guess. could take it down to building supply store and ask them

I doubt a building supply store would be of any help really , Chipboard or 3 ply will be your answer. :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

I sure would be a happy boy if it is Oak :-D :-D

The only places where one can buy wood down here are staffed by pimply faced kids who know what pine, mdf, and chipboard are.
3-ply would be a real stretch 1 2 many :laughing-rolling:

I was hoping there would be some old guy on here that might have connections to the old Brewery, and know what they were made from, but he would have to be a fair bit older than me, and they are getting thin on the ground (& on the head) 8-}

I'll try the woodies forum.
Thanks.

It will be oak you can bet your lefty on that, beer kegs are heavy (thicker staves) No beer gas back then so they had to be air tight. Use it as is and it might add some nice flavour, if in doubt knock it apart and scape the inside :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Funny you should mention the staves, they are 30mm thick!!

I will be a very happy boy if it is oak  :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I am going to try to get a camera into it to see if the inside looks as one would expect.
Thanks.

Looks like it has a good coating of varnish on it mate, so you will have to open it it regularly to let it breath properly. ;-)

No varnish at all. Has been sanded back and lightly oiled with Floods wood-oil, which is a food safe oil.
The flash makes it look a lot more shiny that it actually is.
Pic without flash:-

oiling will reduce ullage, with small kegs that might be a good thing

As a lark I've sent an inquiry to Gibbs Bros. asked about the cost for a small shipping container of 10 gal med toast barrels from Ark. to Sydney. would there be interest?
