Arancello

Postby Lesgold » Fri Sep 27, 2019 11:02 am

Hi Folks,

Just bottled my first drop of anancello. Being my first brew, I was impatient (I am sure that you can all relate to that) Had to sample it after 3 days. Wow, I was impressed. Looks like I’ll be making a few of these. Started the process by peeling 10 Valencia oranges and then cut up the peel into small bits. Used a mortar and pestle to squash it all up and with a cup of sugar. Placed it in a one litre bottled and filled it up with 41%. Left it for three days (looking at it regularly like a new born, giving it regular cuddles) Ended up filtering it through a couple of chux super wipes. Looks really flash in the fancy bottle. Had a bit left over and thought I’d better do the right thing and have a sip. Yummo de yummo. Don’t think it will get much of a chance to age as the family will be down this weekend. Any thoughts on variations or improvements would be much appreciated by this new apprentice.

Cheers

Les

If you had any pith from the Orange skin then you might not be getting the nest flavour in your drink.
Soaking in higher %ABV will extract more oils faster than 40% ABV

I have read in few places that a big jar with a citus fruit of choice suspended over neutral makes a stellar drink as there is zero pith contact.. :handgestures-thumbupleft: once flavoured to your likeing cut with water and sugar syrup :D

Hi Scythe,

Read a bit about the white pith so I took my time peeling the oranges. Wasn’t too bad controlling the spud peeler to take shallow cuts. It was actually quicker and easier than I thought it would be.

Hi bluc,

Sounds interesting. I reckon if somebody suspended me over a barrel of scotch, I’d start sweating. I reckon that’s what’s happening. I wonder how long you could do this before the fruit starts to go off?

Good point. Maybe I should pop myself In a jar of ethanol to keep me looking young and beautiful........(that might be wishful thinking. Was never good looking and have missed the age bit by about 40 years)

Not much difference between that and the worm in Mezcal I guess.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Family tried both the arancello and limoncello that I made up last week. Both were winners. Although a little “green”, I reckon the next lot will be much better when given a bit of age.

Cheers

Just sitting down sipping on an arancello at the moment. It keeps on improving with age but I’m afraid there must be a leak in the bottle. It seems to be disappearing quickly. The limoncello that I made at the same time is also an excellent drop. Need some more neutral to get another batch or two down. Will be distilling my last turbo wash in a few days. Can’t wait to try a TPW or two. I can see this hobby is going to generate some new “friends” in a very short time.

Can we make a Grand Marnier, Contreau, Triple Sec from this base or is it the same thing?

Using turbo ? It will improve dramatically once you start on TPW.

Blood oranges make a nice drop as does grapefruit.

Pleases elaborate bigrig. Keen to hear more of what you've found :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Big :handgestures-thumbupleft: on moving away from the turbo by the way.
