Water Connections Help

Postby CaptainRedBeard » Fri Oct 31, 2014 8:26 am

Hi all,

I'm getting a little fed up with disconnecting my hose fittings and connecting my garden hoses to my still with hose clamps, and the never ending leak issues they bring, not to mention the amount of times I've stabbed myself in the hand with a screw driver trying to tighten the same things to stop them leaking, so I want to flash up my lil pot still with proper hose connections.
I've site searched, and couldn't find what I was looking for, but I did notice that 1/2" BSP fittings were mentioned a lot. Is this what I'm after? And can I easily get them from bunnings?
My PC has 15mm straight tubing as inlet/outlets, so I tried winging it and bought 2x 15-20mm reducers and 2x 3/4" British BSP fittings(rushed purchase at bunnings) only to find I'd have to near shave the reducers until they're paper thin to fit into the BSP fittings.

Can someone give me some guidance and lead me in the right direction?

Cheers
-CRB

Standard garden hose is 12mm, you could see if heating the hose and pushing straight on to the pipe will work, I used to use this method back in the day... for... umm, never mind.

Then get a hose clamp to finish it off.

Hey Urrazeb, that's the setup I currently have, and I'm trying to upgrade it.

@whisky, I think that's what I'm after! Thanks :handgestures-thumbupleft:

For an even quicker setup and breakdown I use push fittings.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pneumatic-Push-In-Fittings-for-Air-Water-Nylon-Pipe-Tubing-Tube-Choice-Thread-/140900812904?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item20ce57c868

If a piece of pipe gets a bit rough at the end due to too many inserts just cut off the end and you're ready to go again.

Hey Whisky,

I'm only trying to do a shotgun pc connection, so the Y connections etc. Aren't going to be needed on this. How did you connect the male to female bsp to your still? Do you have a shiny pic I can see?

Thanks Meath, so looking at yours, I would need to solder the male end into my PC, exposing the female end, then using male to male to connect to the valve. This pic is what I'm stuck staring at...

You can get kinko nuts. Thats what I used, they are brass with either a nylon or copper bush inside that you just tighten up and it seals onto your copper and they come with a male or female thread on them.

Sorry I haven't got time to get a photo but I'm sure there is on in my glass duck thread :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Here's a link to a photo for ya

Not saying to buy from them just the first i found. Bunnings or any plumber should have them

they seal up nice.

If you need connectors that seal better than garden-variety hose hardware but can still be disconnected without tools try Camlock Fittings. You may still need some hose clamps but you won't need to keep undoing them.

They come in polypropolene, aluminium and stainless steel.
