Boiling water may be too hot for some plastic in esky.

Wynum1 seems your right about the plastic, might save myself the drama and just use flaked corn no cereal mash requiered. Bumps price up but all grain is not something i will be doing a lot of anyway..

Thanks have watched that video more than once while getting my head around the mashing process.

Pretty sure what wynum said is right, because the mash is so thick the thermometer probe was most likely giving false readings, low in the grain where I had it and higher in the liquid in bottom then when I stirred the malt through it raised the overall temp and it most likely killed the bulk of the enzyme in the malt.
I will take a small sample tomorrow and add some iodine. Will tell me if there's starch present..

A round eski cooler is what you want for a corn mash tun and a good 240v drill and a paint stirrer
This one has done about 60 mashes without any distortion yet :handgestures-thumbupleft:
I couldn't get the paint mixer to mix properly in a square eski and hence the different temperatures at different levels,but in a round tun my custom stirer will throw the gluggy mash out of the tun if you could hang onto it :laughing-rolling:
A quick mix then chuck in the thermometer and your as good as gold :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Was looking at one of them but was told by the brew shop it wouldn't handle boiling water. Think I will do more research on beer forums before diving in..

I've got rectangular mash tuns that are the solid/molded type and they have all distorted after a couple of mashes but this one is a ripper :handgestures-thumbupleft:

+1 for insulated keg but forget the element for doing corn mash as it will stick and burn :handgestures-thumbdown:

yea, was thinkng rims or herms but thats another cost too. I think bluc does BIAB so element would be ok woulnt it for BIAB? HERMS would be a dream to have if not BIAB :))

Wtdist with a herms setup the wort is pumped through a coil inside a kettle of boiling water correct? I can see grain clogging it and corn mash being to thick to flow through.
So what if the copper coil was in the mash tun and instead of pumping wort through pump boiling water through. Would act like an immersion heater than you could pump cold water through to act as a chiller, would that work with corn mashs?

Solar hot water may be worth looking at for equipment hot water pump they have pumps for circulating hot water and are made to run for years.
Heat pump hotwater systems also have hot water pumps .

Do you mean like an immersion chiller only backwards, have it pump from a kettle of the water with the temp you want through the coil in the mash to heat it up rather than cool it?

Ive seen people use 1" coils so it didnt clog but then i dont know if they did corn meal. I guess if the kettle was large enough then you could use 1 1/2" with bends going up and down rather than around more work and cost but maybe it could work but then a coil in the mash would be easier. would the mash need to be stirred or agitated?

Yea like an immersion chiller but hot rather than cold. To get even temp I think it would have to be stirred, and it will end up overly complicated. Back to thinking brendans insulated tun would be way to go.

it shouldnt over heat it as the temp probe goes in the kettle of water not the mash, if anything it could be a degree lower in the mash if it cools faster than it can heat.
