UJSSM oops

Postby McCraggen » Sun May 09, 2021 10:19 pm

So I made a total rookie error,

When making a double batch of UJSSM with this many ingredients:

8.4kg cracked corn
8.4kg sugar

I had a brain fart and thought that the finished volume would be 50L not the amount of water you add. 8-}

So I basically had to do my best to fit the volume in my 60L fermenter as best I could (approx 66L).

But the problem is its hard to know how much room the grain + sugar takes up.

Heres hoping I wont have 66 liters of lawn food :text-lol:

It went monkey balls bananas! caused a hell of a mess so I in the middle of the night half asleep tipped it out!

Not the best choice but avoided further mess!

I hope you only tipped out enough to stop it going "monkey ball bananas" on the floor.

I'm fermenting my Gen 6 UJSSM at the moment, have run versions 4 & 5 as lowwines ready for a spirit run with Gen 6.

I am drinking Gen 1,2,3 at the moment that has been sitting on oak for 6 weeks and it is tasting pretty good already.

I'm a fan of the recipe, though do plan to do a full corn mash with barley & rye after this spririt run.

Has anyone ever done a double batch before? Would it fit in a 60L fermenter?

I use a 60L ferementer for my batches, I started off with 8kg cracked corn (stockfeed) and 8kg raw sugar topped up to about 50L

Each generation since then I have scooped off the discoloured corn, replaced with fresh cracked corn (about 500g each time) and added 8kg raw sugar, 15L backset and topped back up with water to around the 50-55L mark.

Seems to have been working ok for me so far.
