I put down my first 2 x 60ltr ferments of TFFV on Monday, took off as mentioned. SG 1.074 after 36hrs 1.036 on both, even after 48hrs I can't screw the lids on as airlocks are spewing bubbles! I'll be spending Christmas day in the shed with the bubbler running :laughing-rolling:

Hi stillers!

How do you find this recipe copes with low temperatures? I am struggling to keep my batches above 16-17 deg right now.

Or does it more depend on the yeast? I am using Lowans in a few barrels and SAF in another.

Cheers

I found doing a 200L keeps its temp more.
Well covered . I have underlay, and blankets wrapped around it. But still need to heat it with 150w fish tank heater if its not summer.
I just chose not to do any Stilling in winter.

I do the same, except I use bubble wrap and drop the fish tank heater in after a day or so. Last 2 have fermented out in a week, in a Melbourne shed.

Thanks team.

Any good tips on sourcing 200lt barrels? Do they have to be food safe?

Just using standard 25-30 ltr beer fermenters

I do have a beer heat mat, but bit tricky to heat 3-4 barrels with that

Actually would 220ltr olive barrels be ok?

Is that a weldless 2" TC bulkhead in the side?

I've thought about putting a 2nd valve above the first in mine just like that. Do you use it when fermenting on the grain or just to avoid draining the trub off?

It’s not mine but yes it’s a 2” bulkhead and glass kit from 5 Star.
I seen this on another page but thought it was good enough to show here.
But yes the 2 valves give the option to drain above the grain bed

I will have a look later for something better, but using a painters drop canvas. Seems to have brought the temperature up a little.

Thanks for the tip everyone.

How much volume approximately should you get from a 23L fermenter in a stripping run down to 20%?

Doing my second stripping run for the day :)

What did you end up with as a matter of interest, 4-5ltr?

didn't measure it exactly, but yeah bit over 4 litres @70%. I used a pot still strip runs, then spirit. Came out very clean, and had a nice wheat aroma.

I might try my reflux t500 next time as a comparison.

I'm on my 51st FFV over the last year and a half using a T500, I consistently get 5.3 lt @ 40%
