First one of these down tonight, 23l. Worked on recipe, used vitamins the missus had which had every B vitamin under the sun so I figured that should do.

After seeing a couple posts relating to temps, rehydrated bakers yeast at 30 odd degrees, sorted out the rest and got that ready to go and pitched at 27.1 Yeast Temp with 31.7 Mash Temp.

Unable to get SG since I smashed it when I dropped it this arvo :angry-banghead: so not able to work that out but I guess I'll leave it till it stops fizzing.

Looking forward to seeing how this one comes out!

Wow thats one hellva lot of reading on one subject.
Found it so interesting that I'm now a addicted FFV mash brewer.
Think I'm on my 5th brew and have now stepped into 3 fermenters at a time.
Have followed the recipe to the letter every time and have never had a failure.
My brew area is now starting to get somewhat warmer now that summer (WA Oz) is showing with average daily temp increases.
Have a brew fridge that will take maybe a 60lt STD Coopers type fermenter but am looking at 60 - 90 lt pre used olive drum.
Any suggestions appreciated.
But all in all I think Teddy's FFV is a gods send and produces a mean product that is really cost effective. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I use the big 220 litre olive drums as a fermenter when I want a big batch. Just do lots of stripping runs to get through the wash and come back and do a spirit run, or two, when you have the time.
I have never bothered with an air lock and simply leave the lid on loosely to avoid bugs and pressure build up.
Never suffered an issue by not having the air lock

After putting down countless TFFVs over the years, I thought I'd switch it up a bit. Here are the changes I made to get 100lt of 14% .998 FG in 7 days.

Inverted 22kg table sugar
(Added 15kg at the start and the rest 2 days into
fermentation)
1.5kg of wheatbix instead of bran
Yellow angel yeast

I have no idea how this fermented out so fast.

While distilling, I had to run out and grab another demijohn. I ended up with 12lt of 97%. Less than a litre of heads. I'm completely mind blown. No off tastes from the high abv also.

What temp do you ferment at? I've never been able to ferment out under. 990

Question (from some who only has a pot still at the moment), is this recipe worth running through a pot still, full understanding it would need to be run a (X) number of times & any idea what I could expect flavor wise?

It has a nice light wheaty taste coming off a bubbler at 90%
Definately worth a try running through the pot.
Depending on the flavours add some oak/essence, leave as is or rerun. You can't really go wrong with any option really unless your wanting a very clean neutral. But using a pot you would need to do a few runs no matter the wash

Thanks for your reply B-Man.

Since I started distilling only a couple of months ago I’ve done 3 sugar washes, about to run a TPW tomorrow (which I’ve been told will most probably end up tasting like a Bloody Mary :)) & I have a WBAB wash fermenting as I type.

I’m keen to try some different washes to see what they end like and the FFV seems like a good choice.

Cheers

Hi, Guys

I’m about to rack off my first TFFV wash. I have to 22 litre batches and was going to do a stripping run of each and then combine them to do the spirit run through my reflux.

I’ve followed the recipe as closely as possible and both batches came out with the same numbers for pH at 4.8. However I’m now doubting my ability to read a hydrometer 8-} as I thought I read my starting SG at 1.07 (again this was for both batches) and when I did my finished SG reading it was 0.9.

Running the calculations this would give me a potential ABV of 22.3%. Would this be correct or have I miss placed placed a decimal point and the starting SG was 1.007 which would give me a potential ABV of 14%?

What’s the normal/average potential ABV this was should be getting?

Sg is correct 1.070
FG would be than likely be 0.990 that should be about 11 or 12% at a guess
Although I've had mine finishing at 1.00 lately for some reason.

Thanks B-Man , you’re right newbie mistake I was reading 0.99 as 0.09

Up until now I've been doing TPW and WBAB washes for neutral.

I put down my first 2 x 60ltr ferments of TFFV on Monday, took off as mentioned. SG 1.074 after 36hrs 1.036 on both, even after 48hrs I can't screw the lids on as airlocks are spewing bubbles! I'll be spending Christmas day in the shed with the bubbler running :laughing-rolling:

Image
48hrs in i tried screwing lids on fermenters

Can't believe I haven't tried this recipe earlier ffs!

Cheers

For now I’ll stay married and split shed time with pot/bubbler either side of Xmas day! :laughing-rolling:

Merry Christmas to all.

2 x 63ltr ferments at 0.990 in108hrs! Squeezed in 13kg of sugar in each fermenter, you’ve got to be happy with that! Racking now and will run Boxing Day. Giddy up! :happy-partydance:

Cheers
