ID vs OD of copper parts

Postby CCHHHHHHO » Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:22 pm

Hi All,

I have a good source of relatively cheap (scrap prices) copper pipe, and I had planned out all the parts and pipe lengths I was going to use for a 3" still. I'd planned to use stainless triclamp flanges soldered to copper pipe to make it modular. I thought I was all ready to go, and did a final set of measurements before committing to buy anything... and I've discovered that the pipe is 3" OD, and so is are all the flanges that I've seen. Is this normal? Is Australian pipe different from US/UK? It seems the pipe companies don't even publish specs on ID (but I measured it myself). I've seen plenty of videos on still assembly and soldering, and most of them seem to have pipe ID (not OD) the same as the flange OD, so it all just fits together nicely for soldering... but I can't seem to find that combo anywhere. Am I missing something?

Welcome Aboard mate.

Lots of guys on here with build experience, I am not one of them sorry. Why not pop into the welcome centre and tell us a bit about yourself, where you are, what you are hoping to build, and what you are hoping to make. That way the guys will be better placed to give you a fuller answer.

Good luck with your build

Stainless is measured OD and copper ID. I just got a 2 inch piece of copper soldered to some ferrules, I had to go and get a copper sleeve for each end, I didn’t have anyone to expand 2 inch copper. Reece sell the coupling sleeve, I think they were $9 each.
