:text-+1: I just have a big downcomer in mine.

I too have been thinking on thumpers. My first rum wash, while smelling very mollassasy (I know... not a real word) produces plenty of alcohol with very little recognisable smell on a three plate 4 inch bubbler. I've got a second gen going right now. Maybe that will be different.

But (I know... never start a sentence with a preposition) it started me thinking about an inline bubbler. I knocked up this drawing :



The downcommer extends a fair way down past the bottom plate as it needs to hold more fluid than the vapour exit leg of the riser.

The bath net volume is only 0.92 litres, so I'm thinking that I might need a way to replenish the bath fluid (which will probably be molasses wash) and a way to void the old bath fluid several times during the run, without dismantling the still.

I'm in no real rush to complete this, so I would appreciate any input.

You will find your rum get a lot better with time on oak, also as you build up generations it will develope more flavour. I think only having a 22mm riser would cause too much restriction.

I wanted to stick to a narrow riser. This will put a fair amount of pressure into the keg, and force a harsh bubbling through the exit leg of the riser.

Maybe I need to make it a bit wider.

If you force too much vapour speed into your thumper you could actually be making life hard to balance the rest of the column throughout the run, try to avoid restricting the vapour path too much if possible or you could end up with a pig of a still to run.

yes, I had this issue with mine,
The way I made it was a single, deep, loose bubblecap and J cup downcommer. that way, if you find that the deep liquid bath is causing your still to " surge" due to pressure imbalances, byou can always trim down the downcommer and riser to get it to run smoother ( I did) and it works great :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ok, My downcomer is a 25mm pipe and is about 45mm high,
the riser is a 50mm pipe about 70mm high,
the bubble cap is a 65mm pipe and is about 90mm high, it is not fixed at all and is slotted around the bottom.
all this is situated on a 6" plate
If you calculate the liquid bath correctly, you wont use the downcommer ;-)
