Wrapped a drill bit in thread tape, jammed it in the output of my PC, and filled the still up with citric acid. Looking forward to seeing how it goes :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The thought of undoing all those threaded rods gave me the jitters, also i have a clear coat on the outer ring of my plates so i didn't want to muck that up. so I made up a blanking cap out of some flat copper and a bodgey easy flange, tri clamped that to the bottom of my column then filled it up with the acid mix and just let it sit. Once i was happy with how clean it was i tipped the mix into a bucket and now have my copper mesh packing in there getting a clean. I used the same mix of citric acid and water as mac.

After just a few hours it came up clean as. Admittedly mine weren't anywhere near as dirty as macs but they were pretty black looking. Now i know it's that easy I'll be doing it more often just to keep her looking nice, oh and keep the spirit tasting good :)) .

Unfortunately i didn't take any before photos but there is a couple of after ones.

i did this a few months ago, just never got around to posting up the pics and i cant find the after pics. was lovely and pink on the inside. was a noticeable difference in the next few runs as well :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I have a 2" cap on the top of my column, next rum run Im going to tip hot rum dunder down the column, then a flush with water.
I think that the hot dunder will clean it up nicely.

Would having some loose copper packing in a copper pot still(stailess boiler) keep the sulphides out of the condenser or to a minimum resulting in perhaps a cleaner spirit ie not running across black crappy sulphides or would it still end up coated in crud anyway?

No, you need to have the copper in the vapour path for the sulphides to collect on the copper. ;-)

I meant inside the pot still between top of boiler an condenser (or am i wrong in what is refered to as vapour path.)so sulphides collect on the packing rather than the inside of the still head and condenser. So when it re condenses in condenser the spirit runs across clean copper rather than blackened copper covered in sulphide.

I'm going to make a 2"pot I've got some second hand tube and was thinking that an easy way to make a bath to soak it in would be to use some 90mm poly with an end cap

Think the vinegar 50/50 wash works well followed by a quick buff ..
