Stainless Syphons?

Folks,

What is everyone using for transferring spirits between large caboys and other vessels? I like the ease of use of the plastic autosyphons, but not keen on using them with high proof spirits. Is the only other alternative the stainless racking canes?

I have been just picking up the 25L Carboy and pouring it into other containers... but can see I am going to have a nasty accident with some very tasty liquid :)

Just been doing a bit more thinking and looking around. Has anyone tried a copper jiggle syphon? I guess the hose should be changed to silicone... but I think it should work...

well Fred all I can say is I look forward to the day this becomes a problem for me!lol
It means two things ... you have some decent storage vessels and you have plenty of good shit to store! :obscene-drinkingdrunk:

I use a 54 litre carboy (the one in the plastic basket) for all my runs/feints/strips. When its full I'll do two spirit runs (or I will when I get my power control sorted). The last time I put it up on a strong bench seat, and carefully tipped it over with the boiler beneath it. Not ideal but seemed to work well.
No siphoning necessary if your not worried about what settled on the bottom of your low wines.
Another option if you really want a syphon is a cork/plug that's a tight fit. Drill two holes so your copper pipe is a snug fit through them. One will extend to the bottom of your carboy and bend over the side to be the neck of the syphon to whatever length you want the syphon to be. The other pipe will be just long enough to go through the plug with a little bit of length above. Put a small valve on the end of this one for ease of use.
Now seal your plug well and blow through the short pipe into the carboy until the liquid starts flowing through the syphon. If you want it to stop just pull the plug out or close the valve.
I think you can buy versions of this for siphoning wines but no idea of the name.

Me again.
Found this pic on the last page of Buccaneer Bobs rum PDF.
I knew I'd seen it somewhere. I take no credit for it and just took a screen grab from my phone.
Damned good idea.

for the price they charge in brisbane i would rather use a keg off gumtree for 50$.

yup did a google search on glass carboys and they are more expensive than a second hand keg
would be nice to watch it all age though

Just ordered one of these jiggle siphons 1/2 inch head only (sic) for $3.45 including postage from an ebay seller in Melbourne. Curious to see how it performs.

Cheers

:text-+1: thanks for the idea. $3.45 is cheap enough to give it a go!

Benny,
the one I ordered is brass, though it looked like copper in the picture. Seems I've may have done $3.45. Before you buy check the material it's made of.

Cheers

I tried the jiggler syphon and didn't like it.

By the time I had jiggled enough to start syphoning it had stirred up the wash to much. :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Sounds like a racking cane...i had one but didnt like it had to pump 2-4times alot of the time and as above stirred up wash to much. Im wondering what sort of pump to use with high proof spirit..

Yeah I tried that too but no luck, I either had a dodgy one or my Technic sucks. 8-}

I want it for my hot backset more than anything. Don't mind manually siphoning wash but hot backset is another issue altogether!

This looks like the same principle as a Sterile Siphon Starter that morebeer sells in the US

ill take a short vid and doa youtube embed thing tomorrow.
basically as you lift it it fills a larger clear tube with liquid and when you push it back down the inner thinner tube fills up faster pushing it through the siphon and gravity does the rest
