Hello All

Just getting started, making neutral to create gin and liquers with. After that, onto spiced rum and whiskey. I've made a grain mash that went a bit south, but learnt abit along the way. Ended up with some vodka in the end. Second attempt I used some cask wine, that was fun, the still ran really well having got the hang of it.
Next step is to make decent amount of neutral and get a smaller still to experiment with botanicals in batches. I'll post about that with some questions on another post.
Look forward to learning more : )

Heya MH.
Nothing wrong with a T500. It has limits, but it's a good starting place to learn. Neutral is a good and generally cheap way to get into things, and T500 really is the mainstream entry into that. Lots to read here, decent handful of neutral recipes, read up and practice making heads to hearts to tails cuts and you'll very quickly outgrow the abilities of a T500.

If you want to look at "brown" spirits as you suggest (they should all come off clear!) such as rum and whiskey then you most definitely will find the T500 a limiting factor. But depending on how far you decide to scale things at that point, there are options to add different still heads to your boiler without going as overboard as some of us  :D .

Thankyou, I made a mistake in my profile, my boiler is the Turbo 500 ( 1st gen) 51000 model. The reflux column is ( I think) a 1st gen Alcoengine, packed with ss. Both about 10-15 years old I think? Picked them up 2nd hand rather cheap. All in good condition. I do want to see if I can convert the column to tri-clover. I'll make a post about that..

Welcome to AD MH.

I agree with Mr Messy. You'll need a pot still if you want to make flavoured spirits with that boiler. The reflux column will strip out your flavours. Good news is, 5 Star sell an excellent modular pot still that will fit your boiler when you're ready to start. Being modular you can expand it later should you so desire.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.
