Postby snoozer » Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:59 am

Howdy fellas,
Just joined the site here, but have been distilling a few years and was a member at HD for a long time (mainly lurking tho) before I got fed up with all the attitude after asking about silicon hose for product collection! :angry-banghead:
I'm in S.E. Qld & hope to make some mates here!

Well like most here I'm sure, I started with HBS turbos & essences. Then i discovered Smiley's "Making pure corn whiskey" & as a bourbon lover that got me excited! I've only used flaked corn until now to avoid cooking/scorching issues. All has turned out well and tastes not bad I think after 6-8 months on oak. I've still gotta learn cuts, airing & blending tho' (along with everything else....)
I've just built a steam injection rig from my pressure cooker so I'm ready for cracked corn I reckon! :handgestures-thumbupleft:
I also have built a cider press for fresh apple cider and apple brandy as I'm surrounded by apple, grape & stonefruit orchards here (yeah awesome eh?)
Rum from blackstrap is on the horizon too...
I'm still making neutral with my VM but now its using Wineo's POSW recipe and damn is that nice and clean
I aim to have a 4" flute in the not too distant future sitting on a steam heated boiler, that'd be the ducks guts!
So glad I found his site, it's brilliant!
Oh yeah, I do like these smilies....ha! :teasing-tease:

Welcome mate. Apple season is only a couple weeks away here. I have ripe apples on my trees here at home and waiting on the roadside trees to ripen so can go a cider picking.
Taking it a bit more serious this year hopefully with some enzyme and lactic acid coming and some fancy yeast.

Tell us more about your flaked corn method...you mean corn flakes or steam rolled corn?

Ahh yeah sorry I should have clarified, I meant steam rolled corn not the brekkie cereal...
I've used it on the few occasions I've made whiskey & it works well but its too bloody expensive for me to use regularly. The reason I haven't made more was I wanted to solve this sticking/scorching issue before experiencing it with cracked corn. I now see I was barking up the wrong tree with flame diffusion plates, false bottoms etc after I was shown the way by other distillers like 5Star  so thanks guys!
Yep apples will be nice, I've only ever distilled cider made from reconstituted apple juice with a mate a few years ago, I didn't really know what I was doing other than to throw away more heads 'cause apples are high in pectin which leads to more methanol than other fruits apparently. Although that may have already been processed out of the apple during production, who knows? :-?
