G'day.Introducing Myself

Postby ANTONY » Thu Aug 31, 2017 3:22 pm

Hi . My name is Antony. Just wanted to introduce my self. Sorta new to the distilling art.
I have a Copper Pot-Still with Thumper . So far I've just been doing ''sugar Shine'' , but later on I do have a preference for Calvados/Brandy .( Heard pomegranates are excellent ? ) are excellent?)
My mate came over from the States to help me kick this project off and He found that Aussie sugar is not as ''sweet'' as U S sugar. After researching this , it seems Aussie sugar has more" "filler''.
Does anybody know anything about this. After 3 runs we figured it out ,as in the U S they use 10lbs and here we use 16 lbs on a 5 gal mash.WOW !!
Anyway. I do know it was a magic moment for me when I saw this liquid dribbling into my Macona coffee jar. the first time it happened .
So I might carry on with this Alchemy.
ANTONY.

American sugar is from beets. Our sugar is from cane. If you are using dextrose from the home brew shop, thats different again.

Welcome. There is lots of info around and some very good recipes for various types of drinks.

Wow, even the sugar in america is sweeter.

I love visiting the states but they really do love sweet things. Even their bread is sweet.

G'day

OK . so that's the sugar story? Could'nt figure it out. but now all's good.
He did bring a TURBO YEASY called HIIBILLY YEAStY outta Canada. When we did our first runs with 10 lbs sugar and 2.75 ozs of Canadian Yeast yeast we were distilling in 4 days.
The results averaging 30 Proof.
Now I have a new batch with 8 kilos sugar and after 4 -5 days its fermenting but not producing alcohol .....yet !
Pikky?. Give me a week or so to get a new camera. as the darling daughter (Bless her teenage heart )nicked mine. And I don't have any use for Smart fine as were off the "'grid""
My thumper was introduced to me by my Yank buddy and we found it was too big and was not heating up fast enough without adding another gas flame underneath it.
Si I am in the middle of cutting it down to about 16 in X 22 in .( I work in imperial). As you know with old Copper water tanks their outta shape and a bastard to silver solder. But should be ready for the new batch in a few days.
Thank you for the warm welcome.Cheers
Antony

Yep pic works fine. Do you just do single runs? Did you make it or your mate. 65abv(130 proof) is that what you end up with? Are you doing cuts then blending?

Hey Thanks Boys
. Yeah I built the whole shebang with 2 water tanks and a copper boiler just like me dear old nan boiled her bloomers in.
It looks like shitte on the outside but its clean as an operating rooms inside.
So far I'm doing 5 gal single runs of sugar shine.
I have soaked some in Bourbon chunks but I'm more of a Brandy drinker.
So I will try to run some grapes through . Maybe Grappa? I live on a farm (mid north coast NSW )so usually I have a lotta pomegranates
This year its been no rain for yonks'. so its a lean year ...

Its all new to me.
My Yank mate gave me a lotta tips but was not happy with refabricating dented old tanks.
Oh well. Thems the breaks.
he did say . keep it simple stupid! KISS
Yes 130 proof. The best yet has been 138. proof ,
I have some mates that have stainless stills with cooling towers and so on. .All very complicated.
Personally I find the cooper produces a smoother product . I guess those rednecks back in Kentucky knew what they were doing and they used copper...
Anyway. This is what those tanks looked like before I bastardized the buggers.
Anyone live near Macksville NSW?
Hi-Ho Silver....
