Aussiedistiller, Home Distilling, Moonshine, Home Brew

Hello,
I live in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and am interested in distilling using a pot still to make whiskey , rum gin etc.
I have been mashing to brew beer for about 20 years and have a herms driven brewery.
I have no distilling gear at the moment , just reading as much as I can to better understand the processes etc.
Any advice as to pot still would be appreciated (I do not have a lot of metal working gear) and also some book advice would be appreciated.

Your brewing skills will come in mighty handy for whisky making.

I would recommend going with a modular pot still so you can expand to a bubbler at a later date should you so desire. If you're not terribly handy, or lack the metalworking tools required, check out some of what 5 Star have to offer - the 4" pot still (http://www.5stardistilling.net/4-modular-pot-still) is built like a tank and will last you a lifetime. As for a boiler, you can either go for a modified keg that but will require some metalwork before you can use it or you can look at something like a ready to go milk can boiler such as this (http://www.5stardistilling.net/50l-milk-can-boiler/).

Ignore the "out of stock" messages on the 5 star site, it rarely reflects the actual availability of any items. If you are interested, it's best to contact them to discuss your needs.

As for books, check out the distillers library here (http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewforum.php?f=47) and also read all of the threads in the newbies section. Twice. Therein lies most of what you need to know. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

:text-+1: This is good advice, as for the milk can it is good value. If you have to buy the ferrules and then pay for some one to cut and weld a keg it won't be any cheaper than buying the 50lt milk can from 5 Star. I know I went down that road and when I totaled it up and it wasn't that much cheaper.

Thanks for the welcomes and good advice guys.
I am doing lots of reading and am sure to have lots of questions soon.
trying to get my head around the jargon.
Is it acceptable to ask if somebody localish would be willing to meet and chat about setups and whatever?
