Buying my first still - and Hello

Postby bollo » Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:58 pm

Hi all, Looking to buy my first still to make myself some whisky, I am looking locally & the County Brewer have the Black Maximus & after having a chat they say it will make spirits no problem. Does anyone else have this still & how does it go?

Cheers Allan

Welcome here mate, moved your post here as it's your first, so welcome :handgestures-thumbupleft:

All I will say is be very wary about what your local home brew shop tells you, unfortunately all they want is your hard earned and most don't know anything about distilling and just regurgitate the manufacturers instructions which are more than pitiful....

Have a good look around the forum before parting with any cash :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Echoing what Sam said. If you want to make a true whiskey (or even a sugar wash whiskey style product) then the local brew show probably isn't going to have the still you want. They could of course, maybe you've got a really awesome show near you. Oh, and welcome!

Mate, make sure you look into everything before you drop any coin. My local HBS told me there was nothing on the market apart from the turbo 500 still and "ebay crap", that I was an idiot for trying a tomato paste wash and that the only way to go was turbo yeast. Take their advice with a grain of salt.

Welcome Allan.

You're not a Boosh fan by any chance are you?

+1 on the advice above. It's definitely worth doing a some research before you dive in and buy a still from the HBS.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Welcome to the forum!
All sound advice and the fact that your posing the question before buying, you are ahead of many who leap before they really know what they're buying. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
