Alcometer HELP

Postby Redline » Fri Dec 25, 2020 9:23 pm

hey guys I am new to this game and need some advice,

partner managed to break my alcometer, no biggie stuff happens, my fault I left it in the kitchen and the bottom cap fell out and bingo broken.

bought another one, cutting some spirits and placed it gently on the wooden chopping block as "their fragile and had to drive 2hrs round trip to get this one". started pouring some spirit into the demi and looked down to see the alcometer sitting there and then pop the bell end breaks and two small sections of glass seperate and the little balls of misery dribble out all over the place.

has anyone had this happen? am I alcometer cursed? is there a better quality alcometer available? this was a still spirits branded meter.

thanks in advance

Welcome Redline.
Since this is your first post I have moved it here into the welcome centre .
Alcometers are a fragile beast and if you have such a huge distance to travel for replacements I would recommend a few spares .
5 Star sell $5 alcometers and will deliver directly to your door , check them out : https://5stardistilling.com/product/alc ... -cheerful/

Gday redline, I’ve broken a few and honestly, if you haven’t are you even a real distiller? 8-}
Grab a spare or two as stiggy says and then you’ll be ok

G'Day Redline and welcome to the forum mate :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Now like everyone else YES I have broken one by simply dropping it into my parrot :angry-banghead: bought another from the HBS and lucky for me it's still going but my trusty 50 ml measuring cylinder which I turned upside down got knocked off the bench by a mouse or rat and the replacement ones I bought are wider in diameter and shorter which means if the aBV is over 80% a 50ml cut jar isn't enough to lift the alcometer. :angry-banghead:

How about a thread and show us your setup mate as I'm sure most of us would be keen to see it.

Cheers Bryan

A great tip from "Bushy" when I made my Parrot back in 2013:

"One little tip i'll mention is to make sure you have something soft for the glass tube to sit on. Terrible sound when they go chink on the bottom. Just a bit of ss scrubby or similar."

Pretty sure that little gem has saved me several alcometers over the years.

Ive broken 2 dont stress on it.
