Hello.

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Hello.

Postby Veronica » Sat Mar 05, 2022 9:37 am

Hello I would like to introduce myself. Thank you for accepting me into your group. My husband, Glen, and I were given a still from a friend and are totally new to distilling. We don't know what brand it is and I will post photos later. First I plan to read lots to lean as much as I can about distilling. We are in Perth.

That’s a boiler of the turbo variety , maybe a still spirits 2000w version.
Now we need to see the still, that’s the part that sits on top of this boiler

Thats a super reflux or similar.
Should have a marble or scrubbers in it.
Good for around 80+% if on a controller and run slow but not a very efficient still.
But, good for a beginner and a freebie at that.
Ive never run one myself but Im sure somebody here has

The Stig thanks so much.

We guess the little copper things in it are the scrubbers. It was the best price being free.

First fermenting is finished and Glen has just put part A of turbo clear in and in an hr will put in part B.

We have a lot to learn but have fun leaning. At the moment we are reading here and watching youtube to learn.

Hi Veronica,

First welcome to the mad house (forum) and make sure you have a real good read so you both can learn the right way to doing this hobby. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

now with that turbo wash just use it as a cleaning run then a window cleaner and read about TPW and make that one your first ferment to distill for drinking.

Cheers Bryan

Thanks Bryan,

We have been looking through the tomato paste posts and will do that next. It feels so odd to use tomato paste.

I feel overwhelmed with how much there is to learn but it sure is fun.

Hi Veronica and Glen. Welcome.
Another good recipe for neutral is TFFV (teddys fast fermenting vodka).
Most here will agree with Brian. Use the turbo for a cleaning run then never go back to it. TPW and TFFV need no clearing agents or filtering as long as you learn to do cuts.
Enjoy your journey.
Cheers Steve

Hi Veronica, I have a slightly different (I suspect older) version of this still.
Maybe I just lacked the skill, but I couldn't control reflux with cooling water flow rate.
I would definitely follow Stig's advice and buy a power controller.
One like this:
https://5stardistilling.com/product/pow ... 00w-10amp/
or similar is available from a few of the local homebrew stores in Perth. Even if you upgrade to another still (as I have recently), you'll still probably use the same controller with it.

Hi,

I'm in Perth (North of River) also and started a few months ago - but used to make stuff a LONG time ago - so not really a newbie.
One of the easiest things to make is blueberry vodka and it awesome.
There was a kilo of frozen berries in my fridge for an age and I decided use them up.
2/3 fill a 2 litre glass jar with frozen blueberries - or fresh if handy.
Fill up the jar with 65% ABV neutral - maybe TPW.
Leave for 4-5 days - give it a gentle shake every day to even up the deep blue color.
Strain off the berries - you can eat them if you like! - I don't eat them.
Add maybe 1 litre of water to the strained liquid to bring to 40 ABV or to taste.
Note: your hydrometer reading after the strain will be way too low ABV - because the sugar from the blueberries is now dissolved in the drink
For example - my reading was 40%ABV when I knew the BAV was 60+ ... so don't be fooled.

For drinking I like it on the rocks - yeah!

(great sealable food jars of all sizes and cheap at the big Swedish place in Innaloo, starts with I)
