Hi

I'm not distilling yet. I have brewed Beer and currently fermenting Mead from my own Honey. I am tossing up with getting a T500 or Making a Reflux still from a beer keg. I am here to learn and not in a big rush to start distilling right away.

I would suggest rather than starting with a still type in mind you work out what it is you want to make. Once you get that sorted the still type, reflux or pot, will be determined for you.

Sorry to say this but you can’t make a reflux still out of a keg.
You can however make a boiler out of a keg that you can then mount a reflux still head onto it.
Enjoy the ride , it’ll all become clear as mud the more you read

With that beer brewing experience, do you think you might make a whiskey in the future?
T500 not ideal for that. A keg boiler is more adaptable.

When I started I did something similar to what it sounds like you want to do. Converted a 50l keg into a boiler with 2 * 2200m elements and built myself a modular still ( almost exactly the same Jessie from Chasing the Craft in NZ did when he started). With my modular set up I can make whiskey/rum/etc when set up in pot still mode and can also make good neutral when it is in reflux setup. If you're reasonably handy and can braise copper to stainless steel it isn't too hard to put something together.

Don't make the same mistake I made though. I thought it would be much cheaper to build rather than buy, but by the time I made a few mistakes & had to start things again I could have bought an ok starting setup for less!!!! :laughing-rolling:
