Since 1992 I have been leasing a VT size gas cylinder from BOC (was CIG back then) to push the beer through my beer line.
This cylinder now costs over $200 pa to lease & a little over $50 to fill with Food Grade C02 (last time I had it filled).
I heard an add on the radio months ago that said something along the lines of "why lease, we sell gas cylinders outright" & that has stuck in my mind ever since.
The other day I received my renewal notice from BOC so I gave these guys a call.
The cost of the same size cylinder, which I will then own outright & will be full (C02 food grade) when purchased is $329 .........
Where have these guys been for the last 24 years, could have saved my thousands.

If you where working for a company or the government would you worry about the annual cost if not coming out of your pocket.

That's the problem with government they are always wasteful with my money... Lol

So who's the company? How long do you get out of the cylinder? I'm going to be doing all grain whiskey soon and might have a go at some beer...

I usually get a couple of years + from a re-fill but it's odorless / colourless & because of an unknown leak I did have to re-fill after a month or so once.

The company selling the cylinders out right here in the ACT is called "Gasweld Canberra".

Does it need to be recertified every 5 or so years? Cant remember what it is for gas bottles off the top of my head . Might cost you a few bucks there as well.

I use my keg on legs cylinders, simple as swap and go, but they can be refilled as well.

Gas cylinders have to be pressure tested every 10 years. If you buy one check when it was last pressure tested, it will have a month and year stamped on the cylinder when it was last pressure tested.

If it is out of date the gas dealers won't refill it.

You might do better to ask this q on some welding forums. Lots of guys on there are always bitching about BOC and their rip offs. I know some did buy their own but then they struggled to get refills as the big companies wouldnt fill someone else cylinder.

As the op pointed out, with the mileage he's getting from a tank @approx two years between fills it's cheaper to buy a new tank which comes with gas than it is to hire a tank.

So even if you can't find somewhere to refill it's still a better deal...
Plus the thieves over at boc aren't getting a tonne of your money.

That's the one thing I didn't ask the guy on the phone, "do you re-fill the cylinders" & will be the first thing I ask them on Monday before purchasing one.
It is a concern as I know Boc wouldn't touch it.

They swap the cylinder over when empty for $49 .......................... good riddance BOC :))
