Plates filling with BWKO

Postby macs » Tue Jun 28, 2016 7:42 am

So I ran my first BWKO wash last night (first gen obviously) and it behaved differently to the TPW and WBAB I've been doing. To start with, as it came up to temp, the wash was very foamy. Then, as the plates started to load, the first three very quickly half filled with wash. I eased off the reflux and all went back to normal for the rest of the run. Does any of this sound normal for a BWKO wash?

Just to clarify, the keg had about 40 litres in it and I had two 2400w elements on and switched one off well before the plates filled. The only difference in recipe was raw sugar. I was running four plates.

Everything I collected from beginning to end had an odd smell to it. Could just be flavour/smell from the corn and other grains coming through, again I'm only used to what neutrals are like coming off. The spirit was crystal clear until it got down to about 30% where it started to go milky.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

To clarify, did the plates fill with wash or spirit?

Zak, to me it looked like wash. It had a slight yellow colour to it whereas it's normally crystal clear. It was seriously halfway or higher up the sight glass. When I turned the reflux down it took maybe two minutes to disappear and was then bubbling away like normal. I'm just not sure if the foam somehow got up there. I've had the keg much fuller previously without issue. Cheers.

If it was a puk,and it sounds like it, you shoulda put it in full reflux until it cleared back to the boiler which will take some time.
Or just shut it down, open a site glass or two and give it a quick hose out and maybe throw some olive oil in ya boiler to help brake some surface tension :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah sounds like a puke.
Possibly from the raw sugar having suspended solids or something.
