Hi All,
I have just invested in a 4 Inch 4 plate bubbler with dephelg, I will be making a basic corn whisky for my first run with this new still.. My question is do I really need to filter my hearts on carbon? I'm trying to keep as much of that corn flavour in as possible. Or is it still recommended to filter afterwards even if using a bubbler despite loosing the flavour? I haven't had much experience with plate stills.

Apologies but I have no experience with a plate still but most on here will tell you carbon filtering is not necessary if you get your cuts right.

Cheers Wellsy I cant seem to find a difinative answer on this anywhere as yet, I'll see what the brains trust has to say.

You won’t find much about filtering on here mate, but heaps about cuts.
Filtering seems to be a hangover from the turbo products in many instances.

I also suspect a lot of the guys only run 3 plates to keep flavour in when doing brown spirits but as I said I have no experience and am only going on what others have said

I think I found my answer..Good old Google "Carbon/charcoal filtering is used to clean up a piss poor spirit. It's far better to just make quality drop to begin with instead of mucking around in that stuff." :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Definitely don’t need to filter if you start with a good wash, like you’re planning, and run her properly, not too fast to create smearing and finally do good cuts :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yep do the cuts right and forget about charcoal filtering. You could start with the 4 plates, you will get good clean flavour, if it aint enough flavour for you then cut back to 3 plates next time.

I do a single pass over 4plates or a fast pass over 4plates that I add to my next wash and collect off that.

Atm im doing a whole heap of Bourbon using different still configurations (4plates and pot etc) good to experiment and see what you like. Alot of flavour comes through from the base spirit with aging on oak and time
