Can you share the thought process behind the design please?

Basically wanted to make something very easy to make & also slightly different to everybody else,
i wanted to have the down comer in the centre just because i havnt seen anybody else do it yet & was sure i could make it work.
Looks pretty neat eh.
I hope its going work somwhere near aswell as other designs that are proven.

Hey EG,

There never was a bubble to pop if i hadnt asked for Macs thoughts & allowed him to take a pic nobody would have seen the design but me.
So now ive been looking around at SDs work & very fine work he does but i still havnt seen a centre downcomer.
Could you please post a link as im keen to see anybodys ideas on the concept.

ok no worries EG, I have seen Mods build ideas but then he mentioned expresso machines(i love coffee)& i think he forgot about making booze and stuck with the coffee.
I wonder how his build is going?
I basically completed my plate tree today & made a few easy flanges 2",3"&4". trying to decide whether to go 4 or 5 plate column,
maybe thumper at the base? any suggestions?

You have got to love a centre downcomer for the clean look. I had not thought of using threaded booker rod to hold mine and at the same time use less solder joints. :think: :think:
And Gas On this is looking very Espresso Machine to me :handgestures-thumbupleft:

While no doubt beautiful, I have a question about the design (Dribble alert :teasing-blah: ).

It seems that in most commercial column designs, sieve, valve and bubble cap trays are "crossflow" trays — the downcomer of the above tray is diametrically opposite to the tray below. I gathered that the advantage of crossflow designs is that all downcoming liquid is forced to traverses (or "flow across") the full diameter of the tray, maximising the interaction between downcoming liquid and rising vapour. Would this presumed advantage of diametrically opposite downcomers be lost in this design? That is, by having a centralised downcomer, you are reducing the distance that downcoming liquid has to traverse on each tray before it goes down the next downcomer. Is this a disadvantage of the design?

Im unsure to be honest but this is why i put the spider on the bottom so it should devide anything going into the downcomer by 6 & evenly deliver it to the outside of the lower plate, well in 60 degree incruments around the tube anyway. An 8 legged spider would distribute in 45 degree incruments which would be better again. Just my thinking
Im not smart enough to do the calculations to get a idea if its better to have the product going across the plate or divided & distributed around the tube then work its way to the center, or if it will even work at all but im willing to give it a go.
I can easily make some alterations if im not happy with it.(r&d)
Theres a vid on here somwhere showing product flow across the plates using water & some dye which shows up some dead spots as the product goes across the plate, then i think there was a weir type design which was proven to even these dead spots out. Im pretty sure i seen someone at HD or Artisan having a go at building that design a while ago.

just another quick thought i could put a "t"section on the end of the spider legs which would divide the 60 degree incruments in half again.

I don't think the crossflow thing is really worth worrying about in a 4" bubbler. Maybe worth thinking about for a bubblecap still, but there is quite a bit of disturbance to the fluid on a plate in a 4" bubbler.
Bigger stills it might gain you some, but on our scale, I don't think it matters much.
The product being distibuted in 6 streams, rather than one, might be very helpful.

The scale is too small Imo. And unless this design just does not function at all due To,,,,who knows what,,,,,it seems likely better than what is currently the norm.
And it absolutely has some of the coolest cool factor.

Those vids of plates with die running through them are for a full size petrochemical still. Where big business has cash for research.
Scale that down to 4" and put a different chemical in it (ethonol) and thats where we are. You cant scale nature.

Anyway, I think gas on's weldless downcomer deserves :banana-rainbow: :banana-rock: and one for the ac/dc tin :banana-stoner:
