my us-05 is officially dead

Postby howard » Wed Oct 16, 2024 1:50 pm

i bought a 500gm brick in a group buy, thanks wellsy.
it was broken down into 100gm lots, vacuum packed and kept in a fridge.
i'll admit that i haven't been brewing a lot of beer lately and using bakers yeast & YL for most other stuff.
it was 2.5 years old and i'm glad i usually hydrate it first, as nothing was happening.
i had to buy a few sachets of yeast from the HBS.
i got through about 370gms of it, but does anyone know what i can do with 130gm of deceased yeast?
probably could use it as nutrient?

I have only started using mine from the same group buy but it was in a chest freezer and came up nicely when used for the first time recently. Sonething to learn here I think?

Yeast nutrient is probably your best bet. Curious as to what the manufacturers say for storing long term, freezer?

hindsight is a wonderful thing
i had a year off brewing beer, which would have consumed the whole brick usually.
a shame really, it's a good allround yeast.
i'll be using the freezer next time. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I am about to open my second brick from that buy and it is still going strong so far. I keep it for my beer brewing normally. I can’t believe it is 2.5 years.
Would it be worth doing another group buy ?

G'Day Guy's,
After reading this thread it was time to get my yeast upto my shed fridge :scared-eek: and yesterday tried a starter with the US-05 and after leaving it for an hour saw a little action so just chucked in my homebrew pale ale and just one No.2 enhancer. This morning it wasn't far off bubbling so put the heat belt and soon got some airlock action. :handgestures-thumbupleft: So it does look like the US-05 yeast has taken off but as far as the starter goes it has really slowed down.

I had a small tub of honey so setup 2 600mm beakers with the honey/water after I warmed up the honey, after 2 hours the EC1118 yeast is showing some action where the US-05 one is just dorment.

So I do think it may be worth doing the numbers for both US-05 and EC1118 yeast for a group buy :handgestures-thumbupleft:

They do say a picture is 1,000 words :laughing-rolling:

The one above is the US-05 yeast and the other EC1118 yeast which is much older as that was got on a group buy years ago.

Based on last use mine isn't dead, but it might as well be. Stored in fridge.
Last use was a wheat whiskey wash that seemed to ferment fine but finished out at 1.014.
I've been using a small dose of gluco-amalyse and other batches were finishing around 1.004 so yeast was really struggling.

Well I can confirm my yeast is still alive :handgestures-thumbupleft: that first beer brew fermented out in a week and finished on 1010 and bottled 30 longnecks :obscene-drinkingdrunk: which workout to a dollar each :laughing-rolling:

So yesterday put 50ml of pale ale in a beaker with some of the carbonation drop crumbs and left it overnight, now when I put some US-05 in within 10 minutes there was activity and after 20 minutes it was 1/2 way up the beaker :scared-eek:

Going back to back ferments to get the beer stocks up :obscene-drinkingchug:

Cheers Bryan
