High yield quality turbo yeast... a triple oxymoron?

Postby Robsalvv » Wed Apr 22, 2020 9:51 pm

Hi folks,

After browsing the boards for a few days, I think I'm pretty clear on the board's views about turbo yeast, but I have a question that doesn't appear to have been covered yet...

Is the propaganda for Pure Distilling's "Premium Spirit Yeast" complete bs? Here's an example:

https://www.triplejhomebrew.com.au/pure ... yeast.html

It talks about making a heavily sugared sugar wash of about a 1:2.6 ratio when 1:4 is more typical, and resulting in a yield of up to 10L of spirit from an initial 21L wash. What the hell? Is this yeast bionic?

I thought the maximum alcohol % before yeast died was in the order of 10%, or perhaps upwards of 18% for champagne yeast.

Can a turbo yeast that can survive in such an environment produce anything like a "high quality spirit"??

Appreciate your thoughts.

Looks like typical turbo spiel. Their figures make a 18% wash. It makes a 27 litre wash (sugar plus 21 l water) You then need to add twice that yeast price for carbon and clearing junk.
The term highest quality is, at best, most subjective and very challengeable
Note they also not say what abv that 10 litres is measured at.

If you are here I guess you have already worked out that you can do far better for a lot less in shorter time without lining the hbs owners pockets

"high quality spirit" is pretty subjective too.

The SS yeast I recently bought (not Turbo) claims to be able to handle up to 18% and between 18 and 32 degrees.

I'm definitely not a yeast expert but I think the harder you push yeast the lower quality product you'll end up with. I prefer to run my fermenters at 28 to 30 degrees and an ~11% wash. It might take a bit longer, but I find when that after I do a spirit run and then do cuts I seem to have a larger volume of hearts and less heads/tails.

Yeah look, you can try it.
Only buy 2 batch worth.
Make up one batch how they suggest and then make a batch how the majority on this board suggest.
Run them separately through your still their batch their way, out batch our way, making cuts along the way.
Compare the 2 once finished and I think you will come to the same conclusion the rest of us have.
...
Bulk shite is still shite, so why waste the effort if you can make better end product for the same effort.
