So while at work today I noticed in the yard next door low profile stainless steel IBC with a maximium capacity of 477 litres.

It was on a fabricated stainless base (for a forklift) includes lifting lugs and a top opening the total height including the base support wouldn't be more than 400mmin height. I'm thinking with some baffles and some ferrules I may have found a new boiler ??

Has anyone used anything like this before as a boiler build?

It does sound crazy, if all you had to run on it was a 4". I think you'd need an 8" still to make it worth running. Running on a 4" would take forever. Also being such a low profile would seriously limit the minimum volume you could run in it in order to cover your elements (unless you run it on gas). Having a big boiler shouldn't limit you to doing large volume runs so long as the elements are down low and therefore be covered by a small volume of wash, but this is negated when the boiler is wider than it is tall.

Yes that's correct I'd have to mount the elements as low as possible!

I'd also have to add some baffles to reduce the size of the boiler as the mrs wouldn't let me buy another 6 x 60 litre fermenters just to do a run.....

I'm going to go into the yard tomorrow and speak to the guys, see if they want to part with it, if so I'll add some pics, I'm sort of in love with the low profile tho.

Score the IBC for fuckall, sell it to a scrappy and buy yourself a 100L milk can I reckon mate. It's way too big for a hobby setup IMHO. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Do not think the ibc will be available at a cheap price .

If you're willing to spend the money, it could form the basis of a 200L bain marie boiler with some extra stainless sheet welded into it.

Agree with Wynnum1 though, a reusable stainless IBC with lifting lugs will be pretty pricey unless someone has just abandoned it and it's been sitting in their yard a few years.

Grab the 18 gal keg no matter what :handgestures-thumbupleft: as for the stainless ibc you're eyeing off, they are making more and more alloy "stainless looking" vessels nowadays. I'm not sure what the alloy is made and if it'd be safe for our use. And yes, 400+L is a bit much for a hobby still.

Any idea what was in it before it got to the scrap yard.

We use alot of similar vessels where i work, some are half cubes and some are full. Most of them contain some real nasty shit. I guess with vigerous cleaning you should be ok but i would be pretty careful.
