Looks great GINKING!

I have just started a keg build myself but I'm doing the upside down one. Who did you end up using for the welding? And what did they charge? (If I'm allowed to ask that?)

I found a guy on Gum tree who was willing to do it for around the $200 mark.. It took him 4 hours so it was a lot of work. I had 2x 4" holes, 2x 2" holes and 1x 1" hole.

Everyone else was quoting $400+...

If I had my time again I would probably just buy a 50L boiler.. much easy and less things to worry about...

Hey Bluc,

Yes I have a drain at the bottom.
I drilled a hole and then welded a 3/4" 90 deg bend.
To this I'll connect a 3/4" pipe 200mm long and then the 1" drain valve.
See pic (drain valve is currently being shipped).

Wow! I ended up googling welders near me and found a guy who worked from his shed literally 800m down the road. He did mine for $100 cash! 2 x 4" Ferrules and 2 x 2" Ferrules. I drilled the holes myself to make it cheaper. I also thought I should've just bought a new keg boiler but mine should still come in well under $400.

Now you'll need to soak those welds in a citric acid bath for a few days to clean up the welded area from heat tint.

I'm ordering tri clamps and caps this week so that I can seal it all up and soak. As I don't have any foreshots/heads etc. because I haven't even started distilling yet, what would you suggest I do after soaking/cleaning? Do I just do a basic sugar wash and a sacrificial run?

I'm not much more progressed than you. I have most of my still, just waiting on some final parts to arrive.

I think I will do a vinegar run just to make sure the keg is clean and then a sacrificial run with whatever alcohol you can find.
Sugar was would be fine for the sacrificial run.

What still do you have?

Hey Ginking,

Just finishing off my boiler and about to start building a still myself. Just collecting all the bits and pieces that I need, hoping to start this weekend. I think I have settled on starting with a ccvm reflux but making it modular so I can also use parts for a pot still too. Best of both worlds I guess. Haven’t built one before but have enjoyed doing the keg so I’m keen to give it a go. Been doing as much research as possible, this forum helps a lot! If it turns out ok I’ll post some pics in a thread.

Will do, don’t have anything scetched out, it’s all in my head at the moment. It’s probably going to be similar to the one Lesgold is building, check out his thread “Isolation build” in Hardware research and development, 2 inch column to start with, see how that goes then I might consider trying something bigger.

Or, if you want to do it properly and prolong the life of your holesaw, use WD40 (or similar). It acts as a cutting fluid as opposed to a coolant. Slow RPM too. You will be suprised how fast and easy it rips through these thin kegs. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
