Keg Mod

Postby olddog » Fri Oct 14, 2011 1:32 pm

I am just about to mutilate a perfectly good Keg :teasing-neener: :teasing-neener: :teasing-neener:
No it's not that bad. I have just scored a couple of kegs, and I have had an idea for a keg mod for a while, but I did not want to risk damaging my existing electric keg in case the idea did not work. I wanted a boiler which was free standing which I can flush clean without having to carry a full keg of backset down the yard to the drain.
Now I have a couple of spare kegs I have the opportunity to experiment. It will involve cutting a lot of the original fitting off, but it should work.
If this works out, I will post some pics.

BTW If anyone in the west is looking for a keg, the other one I got is for sale, just PM me

Cant wait to see it, I think boilers are something that dont get enough attention & there's so much one could do them to improve them.

I bought a plasma cutter and TIG so I could start doing something with them too, Festers keg on AD is what inspired me.... it's all on hold now though until I'm relocated

Yes that's what inspired me but I could not justify spending that sort of money on a boiler as I only ferment 35lt washes, so I have had this idea to modify a keg, it's working out well. I did not want to try it on my existing keg in case I stuffed it up, but now I have a couple spare, I thought it was time to give it a go. :D

i have seen some nice beer brew rigs where they flip the keg upside down and use the flange to attach a ball vave using a triclamp set up Image

The way I'm thinking is to flip the keg upside down and cut off the base, use the original fitting to triclamp a bend & valve to as a drain.

Then have a 4" ferule glued on the base as the still connection.

MS, will yours have sight glasses too? :laughing-rolling: I cant see the point of doing such things to a keg unless we can have a peeper and temp probe in it

Ok here is the progress so far. With an angle grinder with a 1mm cutting disc, I cut the top rim off leaving 4 tabs sticking up.

I then cut the tabs to size and drilled holes in the tabs and the bottom skirt.

I managed to pick up some 2"by 1"box section from the recycle yard, cut to size and drill to match the holes in the keg and bolt directly to the keg with coach bolts to form the legs.
I have run out of permitted pics for this post, so see the next post

Continued:
I had a stainless dishwasher door lying around, so I cut a hole in it to fit over the keg flange, this will make a good work table.

Here is the keg table with my column mounted on it.

Its not finished yet, I have to cut some holes in the keg, one for the element, and one in the base for a drain, and its got to have some wheels, and then a bit of a clean up.
:D :D :D :D :D

MS,
Would not that whole set-up work better if you were to position it in the vertical plane?

Cheers.
