The Essence Guide

Hey guys, I've seen a few score tables on various brands of essences in the main thread and I thought we might benefit from making a more comprehensive table, Geoff's table's been a big help for me and it's a great starting point, I figured we could pour our combined knowledge and recipes and brainstorm what's really the best essences to go with, either on it's own or in combination with oak and other flavorings.

What experiences have you guys had with the various brands, edwards. still spirits, samuel willards ect.

What do you guys think is the best essence for a bourbon, rum, single malt ect.

The yellow one make a great lemoncello, blue is your Curacao, green is midori and the other one is a surprise.

Give it shit

I've tried a few bourbon essences, SS classic american bourbon, a mix off ss essences that was meant to resemble wild turkey, ss honey bourbon, edwards bush turkey, the only one that was remotely drinkable was the SS classic American bourbon. Tried a mix of SS classics Dark Jamaican Rum and Qld Gold Rum, meant to taste like bundy, my son loves it, I think it smells awful but tastes drinkable, but then I don't like bundy.

SS melon liqueur and butterscotch schnapps are pretty damn good if you're into that sort of thing.

Now diverting from the essence path and going to have a go at making bourbon the proper way, but I'll still make a neutral, if only for the Midori and Butterscotch schnapps.

Hey V,
Sorry mate, there's always a smartarse. :-D
Perhaps with your interest levels on high, you might be able to accumulate all the different tables and threads and build one big table on essence and opinions of them.
Just a thought, because it is all sprayed around at the moment.
Leave it with ya.

edit-Oh hang on. Thats what you said.

If someone is willing to, they could do like bushy and val has said and get all the reviews into a table, sorted by brand and type, and then summarise an average for those with multiple reviews. Might give people a place to start looking.

The problem with "the other thread" is that people comment on all the essences where it would be easier (especially when searching) to have a thread for each individual essence with peoples comments.

I never use essences straight up, it's either too sweet or tastes like paint stripper, so pretty much every essence I've used I've oaked it in some way, I've got a few bottles of neutral now that are sitting on oak as is, I was never really on the turbo yeast bandwagon because in my ignorance of sites like this at the time, I didn't really know any better, Now I've got 400 L of TPW happily bubbling away, once that's finished I've got my sites set on a few rums and maybe a bourbon!

With the amount of brands & flavours that would be the longest thread in the history of internets, good luck typing the list... see you in a year or so :laughing-rolling:

Please start with vodka essence, it's something I'm interested in :D
