running 2 elements on a double power point, can it be done ?

Postby BigRig » Mon Mar 15, 2021 10:50 am

not sure if this is a stupid question but I have a 10A double power point in the brew shed. I am assuming it means each power point is 10A.

The elements will be wired in to 10A leads. Will I be able to run 2 x 2400W elements on the 1 power point or will I need to run them on separate power points ?

It was installed for a hot tug, had heater and water pump on it.

I will get an electrician to come out and look.

Sounds like a good deal.
Were you the tugger or the tuggee?
:laughing-rolling:

My sparky reckons I am good to run 2 2400w elements off one circuit but I have two so I use them.

In my shed I keep tripping the circuit breaker when I try and run both my 2400 watt elements from the single circuit in the shed.

Correct as they are both 2400W which is 10 amps at 240VAC, the rated capacity of the circuit, putting both on will draw upwards of 20Amps, more than enough to trip the breaker.

very much doubt it but call a sparky , usual point is 2400 max on the entire line

Need to check the fuse or breaker for the circuit. each 2400W element draws 10 Amp so if it has a 20Amp breaker it "should" be good if the sparky that installed it did it correctly and used cable to handle 20 Amps. If it only has a 16Amp breaker then it will be a no go. The spa may have had a 2400W heater and 1000W pump = total 14 Amps. Can you ask the sparky that installed to power in the shed before paying another one to check it.

The spa would have been 15 or 20 amp , ours was 20 amp and had to be hard wired

Update. the circuit is shared 20A with my water pump attached to water tank. Same tank i use when running still :crying-blue:

New dedicated circuit being installed this weekend.

apart from the breaker, which has a fixed value.
i think there are a few variables involved.
the AWG of the cable
ambient temp
connections
solid or stranded wire.
maybe a cable has a max amp rating for short use, but continuous?
my 10A heavy duty extension cable was showing signs of deterioration running 10 amps on spirit runs, both ends replaced.
10A switch on the boiler showing signs of deterioration running 7.9A for long periods, new 15A switch ready to be fitted.

I found that heavy duty extention cords only mean insulation not thickness of wire.

most 10a leads have .75mm2
15a ones are 1.5mm2
I ended up getting some 2.5mm2 orange circ. worked a treat. doesn't even get warm now where the lead used to get warm by the end of the run.

You cant really generalise this stuff - its individual to each install and really needs to be verified by a leccy.

Power points in any house can be randomly wired with 2.5 or 4mm (or even 6mm) wire, depending on how many outlets were to be supported from each circuit and distance from the fuse box, that circuit could have anywhere from a 10a breaker up to 60a. My house for example has 20's on most of the circuits so 2x 2400's is off the cards, but 2000w - 8.3a x2 is doable.

A double power point can run 2 x 10a at once if the wiring and circuit breaker is up to it, Aussie standards permit nothing less as far as the physical construction of the outlet plate itself is concerned. 2.5mm wire is more than capable of handling 20a

Again this should all be sorted out and verified by an Electrician, dont go burning your house down peoples

Sam and Al, I agree, which is why I checked with my sparky.
The same sparky who did the upgrade on my shed when we bought and the same sparky who wired up my elements.
Even then I run the two elements through two seperate circuits.
‘Tis not a garden shed.
