Rum distilling AIRSTILL Help does anyone Have instructions

Postby globalmark » Thu Jan 01, 2026 12:00 am

His guys
Happy new year

i am just started stripping my Molasses rum wash and wondered if anyone had some good instructions on using the Airstill (still spirits) 4L for doing a Molasses wash
there are some amazing instructions someone wrote called "getting best from Airstill" so something like this for Rum would be amazing - which i used in Vodka wash many times - Stripping run then 2nd run but for RUM - or a link or anyone seen a good post for using airstill rum distilling ?

so if anyone has step by sep would be amazing as have searched and searched and very conflicting info - some people dont bother stripping -

Q. Do i need add some Dunder back into the spirit run (10% or something ???)
Q. out of 4L how much should i get from sprit run ( i am guess couple hundred Ml from heads dont use then maybe 3/4 hearts should be good then tails dont use (head tails next run???) - i seem to get m much more on vodka wash ?

Also i would like to make spiced rum like Kraken so do i just add spice after spirit run or shall i use my Gin basket i have add spice - anyone have recipe ?) or whats best way to make spiced rum from it
Thanks guys
Mark

Ok global probly not as detailed but here’s what worked for me,
I was getting 1100 ml per stripping run at 30%abv in the pot. I just dip a jug in and tip into a tube to test with alcometer.

Spirit runs @ 30%abv lowines I collected in 100ml lots, looks like I collected 16x100ml jars
First 3 jars were foreshots, 3 were heads,6 were hearts, 4 were tails, aired over night &
I kept the 3rd heads jar, the 600ml hearts & 300ml of the tails, which equale 1100ml @62%abv to play around with.
This is what worked for ME,

I had 3 fermenters of wash so once I was happy with my first collection I changed how I collected and did 300fores to weed killer, 200to fients jar then collected a strait 1100ml till tails came through strongly back to 100ml till 30% in jar then that went into fients as well.
Leave for 4 months and enjoy a ripper rum, I actually finished the last bottle last night from November 24.
Hope this helps

Working with small volumes and wanting to watch for decreasing ABV, recommend getting an ABV refractometer :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi Robmichelle

Thanks so much for that - Sounds great info and think i will do similar -
I have done most my stripping runs ( 2 fermenters 25l ) and (threw first 40/50ml into cleaning garage pot) but next 1litre i kept but getting low ABV so next 200ml tails keep seperate - so sounds very similar to yours - I did start with full to the line but have double amount ceramic things in bottom and bit conditioner and didnt have any issues ..

as for spirit run - yes sounds perfect i will give that ago with lots jars and check - but guess will be fairly similar
Can i ask what was you total amount rum from your fermenter what was sort of 25Litres wash produce in finished rum ??

thanks again thats really helped and confirmed what in want to do ..

@The realMrMessy - thanks yes i have one and use a lot - i actually use like a parrot catch drips coming from Airstill to check ABV as coming out .

Happy new year all

ALSO Robmichelle or anyone

Do you add any DUNDER or leftovers in the stripping run for flavour or just Redistill after stripping run ? i have read and seen videos few people put a percentage of under in spirit run for flavour
so any thoughts of adding Dunder or wash etc into stripping run - if so what percentage suggested ?
thanks

Sorry for the delay granddaughter stuff lol
No I never added Dunder just lowines to spirit runs.
It doesn’t look like I have volumes per 25 ltr fermenters, looks like 7 ltrs @ 57% from 3 fermenters.

Ok just ran some calculations from figures in my notes….
So a 24 ltr wash gave a usable amount of approximately 19ltrs or wash.
So 5 stripping runs per fermenter.
5stripping runs produced 1100ml 30%abv so 5.5ltrs of lowines.
1spirit run at 4ltrs and 1.5 ltrs left over
1spirit run @ 4ltrs produced 1100ml @62% to do what you like with either water down for essence stuff or water down a little for oaking it’s up to you .
Hope I got that all correct
