4" pot

Postby Potmash Boka » Wed Aug 07, 2013 10:23 pm

G'day all, I will have a 700mm piece of 4" left over from the bubbler. I was thinking of doing a 4" column pot with it. 700mm 4" into a 4"-2" reducer 180 or 2x90 2" elbow into a 2" 550 long shotgun condenser.
What's the consensus on this setup? :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbdown:

Various pieces of copper pipe laying around for future experiments.

Hey Potmash,

I'm close to finishing my 4" Pot build. What I did was;
4" column,
4" 90 bend
4-3" reducer
3" 90 bend
3" shotgun

I would go the 2x90 bends and use a tri-clamp between the 2 bends and the shotgun if it can be factored in. This will give you more flexibility.

Hope that gave some insight.

Fine but why do you want a shottie on a potstill, unless set up vertical they risk smearing where as there are a number of condensers that can run horizontal :?

Interesting point Crow. It wasn't something that I had considered. Would it be that bad in a pot considering there fractions are clear cut anyways?

wouldn't matter one bit on a strip but yeah smearing is smearing , it will make matters worse for sure. you get a bit of smearing with a pot more smearing will mean less hearts

100% Agree. 2 x 90's and a TC between them, that way you can change the angle of the condenser if you want/need.

While we are talking about 4" pot stills, what kind of collection rate would be on for a spirit run on a 4"?

Would I be right in saying that once you have a bubbler you won't use a pot still.

I reckon you'd get more smearing in a parrot, if you ran a shotty at 45 degrees how much of a pool is in there do you reckon ? probably not enough to even warrant consideration IMHO ;-)

You still might want the pot to strip for nuetrel washes to run through your bubbler with packed section.

If you have a modular bubbler like my FSD it can be turned into a pot.

Yeah I always figured that with my build I could run my 700mm packed section with no packing as the column and SG PC on the side as a pot. Do you need to run the PC at an angle or will the shot gun work fine straight up and down for stripping.

You will be able to push it harder on an angle, depends how fast you want to strip

I was thinking of running the shotty PC at an angle and orientate it so that a tube was on the bottom to reduce smearing. The Pot would really only be for stripping anyway, with the occasional spirit run just for shits and giggles.

So does anyone know how to make an inline thumper, I was thinking of using two 8"-4" reducers but what to do with the middle?
