Pot still size

Postby marvinmarsh » Mon Oct 14, 2013 5:11 pm

Hi Again

Had such a helpful response to my previous question today. Will fire another question-

What size pot still should I use on my 50L keg with 2 x 2400w elements? I went for 3" on the boka over 2" to save time (cant find enough hours in the day anymore)

I am thinking 3" pot still with (shotgun or liebig) condenser over 2". Will this save much time over strip runs/spirit runs generally?

Or,

What would the boka condenser go like on a short column, no packing?

Really after saving time, or, are they all much of a much, and just go the cheapest option to save coin?

Cheers All
Marv

I can't give a comparison because I've only ever used mine, but my 3" pot with a 2" shotty strips at about 4L an hour, but that's with just a trickle of water through the shotty. I think I'm limited by the old 3 ring burner I'm using. I want to see how much heat I can get in before my condenser says 'too much, man!", hopefully I can strip a bit faster.

4L an hour strip. I would be pretty happy with that! Not sure how your 3 ringer would compare to the ac power. I like the idea of being able to adjust the temp with gas, just not sure of my stillin skills with the whole naked flame alcohol vapour thing. Cant do that ATM with my electric elements. I just bought a relay to rig up to slow her down for spirit runs.

Thanks for your help!

You need a better burner Zak or a higher pressure reg and you should be able to easily double that figure :handgestures-thumbupleft:

My pot still is 2 inch going to 1 inch arm to a 3/4 inch 6 meter worm in a 40 litre bucket 3 burner on a high pressure reg
Can smash out a good 7 litters per hour filing the bucket once extra threw the run

That's what I was thinking, Sam... I'm gunna investigate when I get a minute. I figured I shouldn't push it on my first couple of runs though, in still just learning :)

That's some pretty impressive results! So a 3 " would do how much more? Or is heating the limiting factor?
So anyone ever used a boka de tuned with decent results, or just bite the bullet and go the pot still?

i would run the boka detuned and see what you think. use 1 element on the spirit run and u will probably make a flavoursome clean product

The bigger you go, the faster it will run. I have 2 x 2400w elements, with a 2" pot still and liebig condenser it would strip at about 7LPH. When I went to 4" with a shotgun, I think it was about 11LPH. So I guess 3" would be inbetween that. Speed wise, a boka is not going to come close to a pot still for stripping wash.

Zac your shotty will handle heaps more than that. Like I said mine ran at 11lph and took bugger all water to knock it down.

I'm gonna need bigger jars!

I should be able to pull about 4L/ hr on a spirit run, yeah?

(Sorry for the thread steal!)

when you upgraded from 2" to 4" did you still keep the 2x2400 elements? or did you upgrade the heating as well

Still had the same elements. I only used it as a 4" pot still for a little while because I had limited height space. Now I have moved and have heaps of room to set up my bubbler.
