Noobie - Still Tower Height Question

Postby ryewhiskeydamnit » Wed Jan 22, 2014 8:17 am

I've done my research....and now am more confused than ever. :angry-banghead: I grasp most of the fundamentals for the construction of my 2" keg pot still tower, however before I start cutting copper pipe or solder pieces together I have a nagging question that I hope you kind distillers will allow a newbie to ask.

What is the "correct" height for a pot still tower is your are going to be making whiskeys?

I've seen short, tall, VERY tall towers but no one says...."For a pot still, X is the minimum height for your still". What is a safe height to start with, and is there a reason to not go taller if you have the pipe?

So..... Help a Yank out.....how freaking tall should I go?

Hi Rye,
To answer your question, there is no correct height. In our hobby level, all we really need a pot still for is extracting the alcohol from the wash.
So, you can make it any height you want. ;-)
If you could quickly swing past the welcome centre with a quick intro, that would be great :handgestures-thumbupleft:

There is no rule for pot still height, as far as I know different height columns will have little to no affect on your product or how it runs. Mine was about 12" and I think that would be about your minimum and any where up to 24" if you wanted.

Thanks for all the responses guys! So, what you're all telling me is that size doesn't matter after all. :O)

I'll post pics once I start putting all the bits together.

for a pot still its more about girth then length, and angle is important :teasing-tease:

Size does make a difference , height not so much. Bigger diameter will give you a faster take off rate.
