Saturday Still Buildin'

Postby jaypes » Tue Jun 06, 2017 3:27 pm

Long time lurker and beer brewer - finally got off my ass and got all the bits (except keg adapter) to get this project underway.

Soldering skills are a bit gung-ho but have it all together with no leaks.

Already looking at a triclover join on the 50mm horizontal piece so I can adjust the angle of the condensor.

Thanks mate!

The idea was to make some whiskey and age it in barrels for each of my sons 21st's - on average 15 years ageing.

Not sure how much will be lost out of a 10L barrel over that amount of time - I have read 2-5%

you won't be able to age in small barrels for that long, it'll over oak and be ruined :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Awesome to know, that would have saved me 15 years of waiting time!

I presume it has to do with the surface area to volume ratio and would not be a drama in a larger 60L keg?

Correct mate, for 15 years you would probably want a 200L barrel minimum.

You could always age for a few years on a smaller barrel, drain it out and put in glass and refill the barrel, the second and third time it will age slower and then blend them all together a few months before the 21st :handgestures-thumbupleft:
