Upgrading from neutrals, Column still vs Pot

Hi all,

I’m upgrading from a pure distilling reflux to something I can make flavoured spirit for bourbons/runs ect. I’m tossing up between a plated column still or a pot, because of possibly doing just a single run on a column/bubbler I was thinking that would be the way to go?
Any thoughts or advice would be great if anyone has any experience.

Cheers

I’d strongly suggest paying the extra and going a 4” bubbler. You’ll never look back :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Pot still = multiple runs and mid range ABV
Plated column = single run and high ABV

Plated colum more refined product add stuff, packed section or carter head to make any spirit, single passes faster runs... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Go for a 4" modular pot still.
That way you can upgrade to a bubbler as you can afford it, piece by piece, if money is a limiting factor.

Thanks guys, the budget allowed for a column still so I will go that way, only thing I wasn’t sure about is if column stripped any or too much of the flavour out compared to a pot.

Taste is subjective some say yes others say no. You can always remove plates or all plates to adjust flavour..

Good move Juzz.. i started with a pure distilling still too, then built a pot. Ran that for a while but just didn't have the time for all the multiple runs so built a bubbler. Aint looking back now.

Thanks for the info everyone,
It’s sometimes hard to try and find info on what is better as some people say for a whiskey or rum you need a pot and others will say you get enough flavour from a plated column, I preferably want the solution that will be the best for time utilisation and quality and not as much worried about the initial cost if it’s going to be worth it. Be nice to be able to retire the pure distilling reflux for vodka too, either buy buying more plates or a packed column.
I’m looking at getting a 4” modular 4 plate column from “Not FSD”, he was great to talk to.
