my first pot build

Postby Smbjk » Mon Jul 29, 2013 4:37 pm

Hey guys

Went to the scrap yard today for the first time and well got me self some copper. I could not beleive it when I rummaged around in the bins and found some good 2" and a heap of other stuff. Bundled it all up took it to the guy and he looked at it scratched his hair and said 28 bucks should cover it. Not sure if he saw my jaw drop and eyes buldge :scared-eek: I then said you dont mind if I come back do you. "Sure mate anytime" :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Can you guru's of copper wizardry ^:)^ have a look at my mock up and let me know if I'm going in the right direction!!!
I still need to make a flange to coupke to my keg.

Yeah, that will work but I reckon you will be better off not reducing to 3/4 before the condenser and just continuing 2" straight through.

Looks pretty nice to me mate, congrats on your first build (and on an awesome deal).

You could consider using a stainless union so that you can detach the shotgun from the riser, might make it easier to move around and store.

I'm not sure if it a shotgun?? I just thought it was a big liebeig. You think it will still be ok to knock down the vapour?

Oh no problem, I just assumed because of the shape. My old pot was about 700mm long and it knocked down 2.0kW and cooled well, how long is that one, and what's your boiler power?

Should do the trick. For safety's sake when you run her first, start the burner slow, check that the distillate temperature is ok, then slowly increase your gas to the desired production rate. You don't want it coming out too much beyond 30 degC, your sizing should be ok though.

Thanks for the comments guys. Would it be better to make the condenser a shotty?. Never done soldering before but am fairly good with the hands. Also does the head need to be insulated like my bok?

A shotty would be better as you could throw more heat at it to make strip runs faster. All you need is some 1/2" pipe. You scrappy should have heaps of it.
No need to insulate the column as your not trying to maintain reflux.
Almost anyone can soft solder, it just takes some practice. There are plenty of tutorial and tips on this and other distilling forums.

Good score, but if that's a liebig it's going to be too short I reckon.... do the shotty :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Will have to see if the scrappy has any copper sheet. All the stuff he had yesterday looked like crumpled newspaper. You think the shottie will be ok with 3-4 inner tubes?

Yep. Four tubes are easy and will work well.

X 2. Four tubes works well. Also, if you have any 2" pipe left, you can make end plates with that. Just cut it down the middle and flatten it out with a hammer. That's how I did mine.

Hi ya,

I'm from Brissie as well and I was wondering which scrap yard you went to? I'm starting to gather materials for my first still. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Howdy, how about you drop in here and introduce yourself :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Then you could start a new thread for your build and everyone can help you achieve your goal ;-)
