4" Pot Still

Postby Konzo » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:35 pm

Hi everyone,

Keen to build something like this to do stripping runs in my distillery.

But intrigued on what the internals would look like. Excuse my ignorance but I am not much of a builder. A mate is going to help me, but I just want to confirm the internals.

Is it just pipe until the condenser? If so that would be quite simple to achieve, or is there pipe inside pipe?

Looks like a squarer version of my pot... No pipe inside pipe, just 4" column, 4" 'lyne arm', and down the 2" shotty... Easy as to build, the shotgun is the trickiest bit and that's hardly rocket science :)

"Zaphod" - 3" Pot - retired
"Agrajag" - 6" Bubbler - midlife crisis build?

Cool, I was hoping that would be the case. The condenser will be relatively easy to build, I was more worried about the internals. I am thinking of a 1000mm 4" pipe, 90 bend, 4" short pipe, 90 bend then 4" condenser, then a reducer to smaller pipe to storage vessel :-)

What do people think about that?

I thought commercial distilleries are required to purchase stills from a licenced manufacturer. Can someone add some light on this?

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

I'll check with Doc, as that didn't actually click when I was planning this. I do know they can inspect/check your still prior to approval. Watch this space regarding the same.

as far as I know anyone selling a still would need to have a licence as well

Could you not use the PC from your bubbler, assuming you went planning on running both stills at once?

Wont be running both at once, but I want to setup my production area to also be "display" so customers can see the stills setup, without being to actually get into production area etc.

Sounds nice mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: probably be a pain in the long run anyway switching back and forth.

I have decided to scrap this idea after speaking with Mac and Doc.

Instead I am buying a still from Mac that can be used for both high ABV and stripping.

Thanks for everyone's comments :-)
